1st Chemo done, but...

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to all the sisters that have been giving me their advice and experiences. Well, I went for my first session of Chemotherapy (Carboplatin and Taxol) yesterday. At the moment I don't feel too bad - a bit tired, but I've felt like that since my TAH. I just wondered have any of the sisters woken up to a very red face as I did this morning? I took my temperature, but that was ok.

I think I may have to go through some constipation problems too. I just got my bowels to rights after my operation, but it looks like I'm back to square one. I've started taking lactulose again and have been advised to drink lots. I hope that will be successful soon. My, what things we talk about on here!

What sort of headgear do you ladies think is best when the hair goes?

Hope to hear from you soon.

The red face you describe in not uncommon when steroids are given. I had it too.
Lactulose is a wonderful laxative. But do you need something that strong already? I found that if I took Senokot every night for four nights, starting on the day of chemo, that it worked like a stool softener for me. Stool softeners like Colace did not work.
But definitely experiment and ward off nasty constipation.
And drink, drink, drink to flush your kidneys.
The day after taxol and carbo is a day that treats most of us kindly. The next three days would find me feeling somewhat yucky. No appetite and lacking energy. But nothing like what I had imagined pre chemo. It is a most doable treatment.
Expect that hair to go before your next treatment. I was a hat and cap person. I had a wig set to go, but only used it once.
Some people really had wig fun though.

Hi Tubs

I get very red-faced the day after chemo, too. I didn't know what caused it so it's a bit of new info for me that it's the steroids. It is always gone the next day. For the first couple sessions I started feeling worse day 3 and my worst, day 4. By day 6 I was feeling much better but not quite normal. A week later I was usually back to normal. It's gotten better and better as treatment went on, though my last session the yuckies started a bit earlier and lasted a bit longer. I think I slacked off on the water consumption so be sure to keep drinking LOTS of water. It helps a great deal.

I started losing my hair at day 15 after my first session. Like Karenann, I have opted for hats over wigs, though I did buy a wig. My niece is graduating from high school in June and I imagine I'll wear it for that occasion, but I find it very uncomfortable. My last session is this Friday and I'm REALLY looking forward to getting a full head of hair back.

Good luck with your chemo. I hope it that cancer into complete remission! Remember, the first session is usually the worst. Believe it or not, it will go by quickly.

Best wishes

I also got a very red face - from the

steroids. By my 3rd treatment, I was getting half the dose of steroids that I started with. Ditto with everyone else who has posted on what days I felt good and bad.

I didn't wear anything. It was summer and it was just cooler. My hair has come back in incredibly curly.

Good luck with the rest of your treatments. They are do-able and believe it or not, will pass quickly.
