I'm 10 days post op. for bad prolapsed bladder (TAH). Still on abdominal catheter with pinching off during the day for measurements of normal urination, and how much goes into bag. Lots of discomfort. I feel that I'll never get off the catheter. Anyone had problems during this time? And how long did you have to use it? Any problems afterwards?

suprapubic cath???

I had a suprapubic cathetur (tube out the abdomen with a bag connected) for 3 weeks post. I assume that's the kind you have also. I had trouble voiding well the first week or so & (at times) was actually thankful for the cath (leaving it open so I could sleep). But I did have problems. Mine got clogged & had to be irrigated--but I don't think that's very common for reletively short-term use. My biggest problem was feeling that the "balloon" (which I swore felt more like a bottle brush!) was going to come right out through my urethra--doc said "can't happen" & that that feeling was also a good sign that the bladder was emptying & working well because it was becoming small enough to close in around the balloon. I just kept telling myself "this is good...this is good!" but yet I dreaded to have to urinate. Anyway, when it got to that point he had me only use the bag to measure my residuals after my first & last voids of each day for a week & I barely had any each time--so then I knew that my bladder was truly ready to do its job on its own, and it was good to have that peace-of-mind. I am now 8 1/2 weeks post & doing great! I honestly believe that I am doing well because I had that blasted thing to let my bladder heal & rest until we were certain it was ready. I can't help but wonder if others are having bladder probs post op because they didn't have a cath long enough if even at all (for those who had bladder repairs). Hang in there now & it won't hang out later!!!! (Sorry--I have a twisted sense of humor sometimes!)
