Rare form of Ovarian Cancer found

Hi Donna,

Sorry to hear about the cancer ... I too have ovarian cancer stage 2B. Did they tell you what stage and grade you are? Depending on that information there are different "protocol treatments". Mine is surgery plus 6 chemo treatments. I opted not to have the chemo until I'm 100% sure there's any residual cancer cells left. I'll know that when I'll have my next PET scan (in about 2-3 months). They will compare it to the one I just had that shows light activity but can't be sure if it's cancer or surgical healing. I also lost a lot of weight - I weiged 100 lbs (I'm 5'8") and looked like hell. But I've out on some pounds -I'm now 115 lbs. It's hard to eat after surgery -my stomach would really hurt after a meal. My doctor advised it was due to the "manipulation" of intestines durig surgery. Please keep us posted and hang in there. Thank God for this site, it has helped me keep my sanity!

Rare form of Ovarian Cancer found

Dear Donna,

I hope that there's some recommended treatment protocol for your type of ovarian cancer. Do you know what your rare form of cancer is called? Or the stage or the grade? These things all factor into whether or not there will be a recommendation for chemo. If your doctor recommends it, most of us here would probably agree that it is the best thing for you to go ahead and do it. But it is really up to your medical team.

Cancer can be microscopic, so the chemo is helpful in that regard. It will not always show up on a scan. Chemo is no picnic and it is not fun to go through. But I opted for it, as I believe it will give me the best chance at a long life.

I lost weight after surgery, then even more weight once chemo started. Now, I am doing low-dose chemo every Monday (as a precaution, because I asked for it) and I have gained about 10 pounds back.

So . . . I'm around 5'9" and my before-surgery weight was 168 (I did have fluid accumlation -- 2-3 liters worth), my post-surgery weight was around 151, and my weight after my first chemo was 140. But I couldn't eat for a week, etc. I got my weight back up to 149 by the time the next chemo rolled around (which my nurses told me I should try to do), and kept going up and down through chemo.

My weight this morning was 154. I'm more comfortable at 145, and would be thrilled at 140. So I will have to keep working on it.

Weight fluctuations are common, but you should always discuss them with your doctor.

Please let us know (when you can) the name of your cancer, the stage and the grade. s!
