freezing w/ colposcopy affect cone results?

My pap diagnosised me with adeno carcinoma in situ (AIS). I went in for a colposopy, after the Gyn was done, the nurse asked if he wanted liquid nitrogen. He said yes, and I know he did something- I couldn't really "see what he did". Results of that said mild & moderated dysplasia (different areas) I am not sure of the type- if it was glandular or not. Said I needed a cone biopsy and a Hysterectomy due to enlargement of uterus.

I changed Drs. since the 1st GYn didn't explain things well and I wanted a second opionion. 2nd dr. said no hyst was needed due to enlargement but, a conization was due to abnormal cells. He explained things well. Read from my reports but at that time I was unaware of the different types of cervical cells.

Had cone biopsy- Dr. called to tell me he was referring me to Gyn/Onc because of the descrepencies of the reports and he read the pap to me again- that is when I caught the "adeno" part. He said my conization only showed atypical cells.

My question is- could the freezing have slowed down/ killed some of these cells? is it normal to do a freezing before a cone biopsy. could that have affected my biopsy results?

When I first had CINIII, I was told to have LEEP by my doc, who also mentioned that an alternative treatment was cryo. LEEP was preferred because cryo destroyed cells and therefore made biopsy impossible. So I'm guessing that it's possible for cryo to have destroyed some CIS cells. And yes, normally cryo or LEEP would be done before cone biopsy since they are in-office procedures and less invasive. At least, that's the protocol in my doc's office.

Why don't you call your new doc and ask him? This is a good question!

stella blue -

Thank you for the reply- I will be asking my Dr. - I have an app't on Tuesday. I read more about the cryo treatment and I don't think the Dr. did the "full cryo treatment" with holding it there for a few minutes and then waiting another 5 minutes. I think he just swabbed me with the nitrogen. I stil l think it could have affected things.

I think that CIN III covers both severe dysplasia and CIS. From what my Dr. said it is sometimes hard for pathologists to tell the difference of severe dysplasia from CIS so, the pathology report will call it CIS to call attention to the situation. I guess CIS is is usually of 100% the cells but anything over 70% or 75% can be called CIS depending...

I certainly have learned a lot about cervical dysplasia, CIS, AIS, and more throughout this experience. I just hope that I can be helpful to others when the time comes.

Thanks again,
