Sooooo Disappointed!!!

I just don't know how to express how disappointed I am....I had my surgery date set for April 2nd. I arrived, was shaved, given a shot of blood thinners, oral meds for cramping, and put on IV (twice since the 1st one didn't work), and given antibiotics. I was even so much as wheeled down to the OR. My Dr.'s resident came out and met with me for a minute and told me that I would be ready to go within 10 to 15 minutes. I waited....and then was told by a nurse that by surgery had been cancelled!!! My Dr. had been called in on an emergency surgery!!! To make matters worse, I now won't be scheduled until at least the 14th or 28th of May. I just can't believe that I rearranged my whole life for something that was going to be an end to so many of the problems that I have been experiencing...and now this. I know that I will get to have my surgery eventually, but now I'm terrified that the same thing is going to happen again when I go back again. I think that I was so nervous waiting, that I was emotionally drained when they told me it wasn't going to happen. Now this is all that I can think about. And I'm back to waiting by the phone for my appointment. This is so hard.

Oh that stinks! Emergencies do happen and unfortunatly it's nothing we can control. I can imagine being in your shoes, it must have been such a shock to get that far and then have it all stop. Can you ask to be put on a cancelation list?

I was hoping that I could get on a cancellation list, but the DR is going to be away from the hospital until then.

But you are right...emergencies do happen. And I keep trying to tell myself that someone needed her more than I did. That's helps to make sense of all of this.

You poor thing!
Getting all the way there and then being cancelled...that is the absolute worst! To have to go through the waiting again, and all the emotions. I feel so bad for you right now, I am so sorry!
lots of love and sympathy

What a horrible thing to have happen. I really can't imagine how frustrated you must be, to go through all the waiting and anxiety & then to get that far & have it cancelled. My thoughts & prayers are with you.

Thanks Akita...I think that's what was most difficult...dealing with all of the emotions. I was in such shock, that once I realized what was happening, the floodgates just flew open. I couldn't stop crying all day. And it's hard to explain to people why it was so upsetting. What's hard as well is having people call to see how you made out, and having to explain the whole story over and over again. And they all mean so well, that I am trying to be patient. I'm just so glad to have people like you guys who understand how emotional this all is. Thanks again.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I don't quite understand why your surgery was postponed for such a long time. As a nurse, I know that usually a scheduled surgery will be delayed due to emergencies. Depending on how long the emergency takes it still might be done later in the day or at the very latest the next day that the doctor will be operating. For many LIW's there are many arrangements to be made before we are able to take the time we need to have our procedures and recover. Work, family, financial considerations and life in general. If it were me I would question my doctor as to why so long. I realize that in most cases our surgeries are considered elective but, it is not cosmetic surgery, it is not something we would elect to do if it weren't necessary and most of all our time is valuable, just as valuable as the doctors. I am not badmouthing physicians, I have worked with them for 34 years and have the utmost respect for most of them but, if this is a physician you know and have established a good doctor/patient relationship with I would seek out some answers and if you are not satisfied you legally have the right to copies of all of your medical records and tests and maybe seek another physician. I am not saying that there may not be very legitimate reasons for this long delay but, you need to know what they are and be okay with them. Please remember we are all here for you. Keep us updated and the best to you. Try to stay positive. Suri

How poopy can it get? Send that doc a 'thanks for nothing' card!

You poor sweetie. Well, we're on your side.

That ol' doc better have done an OUTSTANDING job on his emergency surgery or the Hyster Sisters will all look at him with the furrowed brow and frown of outdoneness!

Wow, what a mental picture *that* is.

Sooooo Disappointed!!!

Thanks...the information that I have been given thus far is that she is out of town for the two other ORs that she visits (I'm not sure where they are at this point). I was even hoping that I could have gone to one of those, but apparently that's not possible due to previous scheduling. So her next OR date in my town will be on the 14th of May, and she only operates every second Friday. I practically BEGGED them to let me wait and see if I could be done later in the day. I would have waited for hours if I had to, but they said that the day had been totally scheduled already, and that someone else would have to be "bumped" if they let me in. So they took me back to the prep room and that was that. I'm definately going to try to get some more concrete info from her office, though.

Oh...so they had to bump YOU?? They couldn't bump someone ELSE??

I'd almost have to tell that doc that if this happens again, he's fired if he doesn't bump someone else.

It is absolutely too difficult, temporally and spiritually, to prepare for this surgery more than once or MAYBE twice.
