New to site, June 2 hysterectomy scheduled

A friend told me about this site, and let me tell you I am so happy to have found y'all! I lost my dad in same hospital just last November, so I'm a nervous wreck thinking about going back into that hospital. However, my family can't take any more of my mood swings and exhaustion. This is a necessary surgery. I've never had an incision or stitches/staples before. Scared of the pain and down time. Anybody want to tell me how bad the pain will be? (I'm also overweight and worried about the "pull" from the extra tummy on the incision) Anybody with experience with this?

We are glad that you found us too! As far as the pain goes, I think a lot has to do with your tolerance and the type of procedure you are having. I am going to assume abdominal since you are talking about an incision, even though there a small ones with a LAVH. Personally, I was waiting for the pain to hit, and it never seemed to. I also had an epidural started before the procedure, which my dr said blocked the nerves before being cut so it tricked them into not thinking they were. My doc also gave me great advice of requesting pain meds 20 minutes before you think you will need them, so you never experience pain. I think a lot of us ladies were in so much constant pain before the procedure that the surgery didn't seem as bad as we thought. I will say though, the most pain I felt was getting out of bed!

I am also "fluffy". I didn't experience any significant pulling or tugging on the incision site. I am tummy or side sleeper, so that posed a little bit of a challenge. I used a pillow tucked under my abdomen when I laid on my side to kind of keep things propped up.

I had a general, then a PCP pump with morphine for 24 hours after surgery. I pushed the buttton every time I thought of it, because it is important not to let the pain get bad, it's hard to get it under control. After the PCP was removed I was on Percocet orally. Everytime the nurses asked if I wanted one I took it, for the same reason, not to let the pain get ahead of the meds. I never experienced any real pain, some discomfort maybe, but nothing like I anticipated.

Check out the PreOp Hints and Articles (click here) PostOp Articles (click here) and Princess Stories (click here) for information and answers to help you get ready for surgery and what to expect after surgery. There is also an awesome resource link directory you can get to by clicking here or click Resources at the top of each page.

Read and research as much as possible to help you, in conjunction with your DR, make the best decisions for you.

Best wishes!
