No cervix, no pap smears????

This may be a silly question, but I'll ask it anyway. I am having a TVH, and the cervix will be removed. Does this mean there is no need for pap smears, since there will be no cervix?

still need one!!

Yes, you still need the pelvic and pap...there might be some cervical cells still there and they still need to exam you....sorry, but most Dr.'s do agree with this. Your Dr. might not, but just ask.

Thanks for the reply! I guess it was wishful thinking on my part! Oh least there'll be no visits from Aunt Flo!

No cervix, no pap smears????

I had the same thing as you but my doctor said he wanted to see me once a year still.

I don't have one problem doing that, at least I won't be on my period or trying to schedule an appoinment around it.

No cervix, no pap smears????

I'm 54 and had a TAH. My doctor said I'll need an exam every three years even though I have no cervix. It gives a chance to be sure there're no vaginal problems, etc.

No cervix, no pap smears????

Same here. At my 6 week my doctor made a point to say "see you in a year! and yes, you still have to come in every year". But....if I continue to test well, (i've never had an abnormal smear and ovarian and cervical cancer does not run in my family - we have other things - muscular dystrophy) after a few years he said we can then go to every other year.

So yes, you still have to go every year. They not only test for cervical cancer but also other vaginal abnormalities and cancers along with breast exams and general overall female health so it's a good thing. I don't mind them and I didn't think about having to schedule around a period! Wow! that's right huh! We won't have to worry about it - we can go when it's a good time for us! Woo hoo!!!!

No cervix, no pap smears????

Hi...I had my surgery April 5th and had everything removed vaginally.I asked my doctor If I still had to have paps and he said never..theres nothing to test. My girlfriend said her doctor said every 5 years just to have a look but I think she still has her I guess they all say different.
I'm feeling pretty good coming up on 4 weeks pre-op.I had have my premarin upped a few times and am taking promethium with it and the headaches and night sweats have gone and I'm smiling again All of a sudden last week I went through a crying time but thank God its better and I can't wait to get back to my gardening.
I can't believe its come and gone so fast.4 weeks ago this weekend I was scared to death but it was no where near as bad as I imagined
God Bless You all Hugz Becky

No cervix, no pap smears????

My dr told me that it depended on the reason for the cervix removal. I had cancerous cell so I still have to go every six months for the first year and then once a year. She said that if cancer was not a concern she recommends every three years. I didn't have a pap for ten years then 2 years ago I started having abnormal cycle so decided to go to dr and had a abnormal pap and and in the last 2 years it turnrd to cancer. Who know how long the abnormalties were their and I sometime think that I would have had regular paps and exams I wouldn't have had to have a hyster. I will never miss another yearly exam.

No cervix, no pap smears????

Hi Ya know..I thought never sounded kind of silly..but does anyone know what they test if all the female girly parts are removed?
Curious if anyone knows..Thanks Becky

In some cases although the cervvix has been removed there still might be cervical tissue left behind or rather cells. It is a good idea along with the usual breast exams and just looking. It really is a option for the Dr....but I usually see that most Dr.'s are doing this now and I am a PA and the Dr. that I practice for does do yearly exams even after a hysterectomy....oh well.
