Lost and Confused

Hello ladies,
This website has been very informative since I learned about the possibility of surgery. I'm still questioning my doc. about alternatives. I have fibroids on the inside of the uterus wall which is causing month long periods, cramping out of this world and huge blood clots and my insurance won't pay for the shot to stop the bleeding. Should I get a second opinion. I've had the ultrasound, the endometriosis biopsy and my last internal exam says that my uterus is about 14 weeks pregnant. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Anybody got any ideas.

A second opinion is always a very good idea.

You may want to check out the Hysterectomy Options and Alternatives Board (click here) at the top there is a great list with links to all kinds of alternatives.

There is also an awesome resource link directory you can get to by clicking here or click Resources at the top of each page. You can find almost anything relating to hysterectomies, surgery, hormones, diagnoses, books, the list goes on and on. Check it out!

Best wishes!

I too had a large uterus due to fibroids.

I was a candidate for a LSH. I had lupron shots to shrink the fibroids. Sounds like the shot you were talking about?? Or a similar-type shot?? I had a 70% chance of a laparascopic surgery. It all turned out well and I am 2 weeks post op.

The shots lasted three months, then a final ultrasound and then the "go" for a Laparascopic SupraCervical Hysterectomy. The 4-month wait?? TOTALLY worth it. I am very happy with my surgery results.

And insurance?? I hear you on paying out of pocket. I was caught with my pants down (figuratively speaking) because my husband and I were between insurance carriers. He had been laid off and he had just started at a new job. Our timing was terrible.

Luckily, my angel of a mom helped me out with payments for the shots and surgery. I got to the point if one more nurse at my Dr.'s office said, "No insurance??" I was going to scream. MARK my file, will you!! I felt like a leper.

I can make a suggestion. If your insurance company does not cover the shots and it will cover the surgery, maybe opt for that. The shots are very expensive....yes. And......maybe check and see if your Dr's office has a payment plan schedule. Your Dr. may also give a discount for cash payments. Many do.

And in my case - my total LSH bill came in thousands of dollars less than the approx. amount I had gotten for a TAH. Kind of offset the price of the shots. THAT said....no price tag can be put on one's health.

I can suggest soul searching and getting a 2nd opinion. Even a third. I was like you. I wanted alternatives. I left my first Dr. because I did not hear any alternatives to a TAH. I was ready for a TAH, if need be, and I wanted to exhaust all possibilities first.

Hang in there, girl!! It feels like detective work when you are checking out all the Hyst info. Some days I felt so sure of everything and other days, I felt like I hope I am on the best road. The more one is educated...the better, I think.

Good Luck.

Hi Gingersnap,

It never hurts to look at all alternatives or to get a second opinion. I waited too late to go to the Dr. to have very many options other than a TAH. My tumors are too large for anything else. So take a lesson from me, search all options early and don't delay. I go into Kennestone next Thursday for the surgery. (I just live up the road from you in Kennesaw.) You have come to the right place for support and advice. Good luck!

Tammy
