help - increasing pain and fever

Hi sisters -

I don't know what to do. For the last few days, I have been having acute pelvic pain (from hip bone to hip bone) with a low grade fever (100.5 - 101). I also have some flank pain and a persistent headache that isn't going away. I'm feeling nauseas and weak and last night I felt the worst I have in a long time.

I called my ob/gyn and the assistant didn't even talk to my doctor. I have been taking Vioxx - but that doesn't reduce my fever and certainly doesn't help with my pain. I felt she shined me on because she told me to call my regular physician - you probably have the flu she said.

SO now, I'm feeling abandoned by my doctor who I have relied upon so much. I do have a call into my general Dr - I hope he can see me today. I am also trying to get into see a specialist, but I don't think she'll have time for me for another month.

Any suggestions? I feel so rotten I'm crying. I am thinking of just going to the ER - but I'll wait until I hear back from my docs.

I don't feel like a hypochondriac - I know something is out of whack.

I need you sisters - please, if you have any advice I welcome it.

Love,
Theo

You have the RIGHT to speak with your doctor directly. When you call the office, make that clear to the receptionist that takes your call. You will have to be your own advocate and firmly state that the assistant did not address your concerns and you want a call back directly from the doctor at her/his earliest convenience, and inquire as to the normal hours for the doctor's call backs. You may need to hound a little, they are obligated to give the doctor your message. It is likely that he/she is not even aware of your initial call at this point.
Seeing your regular doctor is certainly better than not being seen at all, but you ob/gyn should be making the decision as to whether or not it is the flu.
Meatime, take good care, drink lots of water and rest, rest rest.
Please let us know how you are doing!

That's what I'll have to do - you are right. I just don't want to be a whiner. I'll just be agressive. I'll keep you posted.

I notice you are from Maine. I just talked to my mother who lives in Stockton Springs. My sister lives in Winterport. I hear that spring has finally arrived. I hope you are enjoying it.

Thanks for the support. It means the world to me...

hugs,

I feel you should go to the ER. I was told if I run a fever over 100.5 to go there myself. I am concerned about you. Go with your gut insticnt. Even if it is just the flu, you need to be looked at.It's not worth waiting for.

My discharge instructions read "call for increasing abdominal pain and fever"...I would call your doctor who did the surgery and say...I want to SEE the doctor...

I can't believe how rotten some of these doctors are???

My doctor told me if I get the answering service and they try to give me the "on call" doctor I am to get really agressive and tell them to get HIM and only HIM...he said DAY or NIGHT...if I have a problem...

Wow ! Fever and pain = doc.You did what you knew was right and that was their response? You aren't even 4 months post.Doesn't this make it a concern for the Gyn? Or am I wrong?

My general physician is going to see me this afternoon. After I log off, I'm calling my ob/gyn and will be asking to speak to HER directly.

Yeah, something is going on. I want my mommy!

Thank you dears...I'll keep you posted.

If you are having pelvic pain and having a fever I would certainly keep trying to contact the GYN. If, however, you cannot get to him or her, make an appt. with you GP.

Update

Hello Sisters -

I saw my General Physician today, but before hand, I went to my ob/gyn to get some of my records. The assistant said that they had already given them to my GP.

My GP spent an hour and a half with me - he took all of my history and did some physical exams. He then told me that he thinks I have something called CRiPS - it is a nerve disorder where nerves have become agitated for some reason (no, duh) and even if they are "okay", they still send messages to the brain that there is pain.

I am somewhat relieved with this news - and he assured me it is not degenerative. As far as the constant pain, he prescribed Neurotin (sp?) which after two weeks or so should "reprogram" my nerves. Weird huh?

In the mean time, I cannot take any Motrin, Vioxx, etc. All of the OTC analgesics and short term narcotics can make every thing worse. THere is a pain killer that is effective with the pain and does not cause rebound pain - methadone. Yea right.

Has anyone had this sort of therapy or syndrome? I'm curious because this is all new to me. Regardless of the diagnosis, I feel relieved that I have someone who is attentive and will work with me.

Thanks Sisters.

Love,
Theo

help - increasing pain and fever

Sorry to hear your not feeling so good, I too had a burning pain from hip to hip, thats how it all started. I too had a fever, not really noticable though, and I too felt like crap and knew something was not right. After calling the Dr.s day after day and getting chinned, one day I woke up with really bad- what felt like gas pain and ended up going to the ER after hours of trying to contact my DR. I was admitted and by the next morning my body went into septic shock( If you do not know what that is you should google it) to make a long story short I was in ICU for 3 days and hospital for 11 days, I had to be cut open again but this time from my breast bone down to my growing. Somewhere along the 12 days that I was home from the hysterectomy I got a staph infection that spread into my blood stream. I almost died. I do not want to scare you but if you feel like something is not right do not hesitate to go to the ER and back again if you dont get results. I was at the ER three times after my hysterectomy because I knew something was terribly wrong. Only you know your body and when something is not right you have the feeling, not the DR.s Good luck and please keep me posted.
