Is there anyone out there taking Gleevec

My mother-in-law has been on Gleevec for about 6 months. She is a two time breast cancer survivor and was diagnosed with Uterine cancer about 3-4 yrs ago. Had a hysterectomy as her ovaries were removed after the BC. Last November, she developed Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumors or GIST. She was put on Gleevec and the tumors have not advanced in size. I have heard there is a positive response to Gleevec for other cancers such as Leukemia and Ovarian/Vaginal/Uterine Cancers. She is 84 and has very few problems with the meds unless she takes it on an empty stomach. Can anyone share their experiences? The cost is very high and her being on Medicare it is not paid for. She feels that she will take the drug to keep tumors small and relieve her of symptoms they may cause (also feels that she is a good guinea pig).

P.S., My mother-in-law in doing better than most 84 yr olds so modern meds., surgery, and God have given her a very good life.

Hi Majik

Your Mother in Law sounds like a strong wonderful woman and blessed to have you for daughter in law. I did a quick research on gleevac and it seems to be mostly used for leukemis, gastro intestinal tumors and brain tumors. Most of us on this board have experience with gynological cancers and probably would not been taking Gleevac. I did find in this link a few messages on the Americal Cancer Society board from people who are taking this drug. Hope it helps

Mother-in-laws cancer considered Uterine

My Mother-in-laws cancer was primarily in the Uterus, so they refer to it as Uterine Cancer. I did search the net and found clinical trials back in 2002 where there were Gleevec trials for treatment of Ovarian Cancer with some success. Her oncologist told us that it was used to treat GYN cancers. I might have been mistaken that it was a conventional treatment. I did find the article you recomended and they were using it for Leukemia. I just was wondering if there were women out there with Peritonial Cancer or Ovarian Cancer using this med. Thank you for your response.
