Scar Tissue

HI, I have a fibroid cyst and my Dr. suggested to take the ovaries. I am leaning towards, taking everything. My sister had Ovarian cancer 20 some years ago and cancer runs in my family. That is why I'm wanting to have everything taken. My concern is I have had many surgeries and I know there is a lot of scar tissue. Does this cause more of a risk during surgery? I had a test many years ago that showed one of my Fallopian (Sp) tubes totally blocked with scar tissue. My surgery would be around June Th.
I also have Diabetes, but only take oral medicine. What do I have to look forward to?

Scar Tissue

Many of us have lots of scar tissue from previous surgeries, and from endometriosis. I know that my pelvis is full of adhesions (scar tissue), and from wht the doc tells me, it just makes the surgery a bit more time consuming. It takes time to seperate the adhesions from the normal tissue, and cut them out. There's no telling whether the adhesions will re-form following your hyst.

As for the diabetes....I too have type II diabetes, and have found the hospital staff wonderful in checking and regulating my blood sugar levels when I've been in for the last two laparoscopies. The one extra concern that diabetics have is wound infections. Diabetics are more prone to infection, and many take a longer time to heal. For this reason, my doc ensures that I am given IV antibiotics (anceph) before I go into the operating room, and then either IV or oral antibiotics after surgery. You just need to be really careful to keep the incision dry and watch it for redness or other indications of infection.

Hope this helps.
And welcome to hystersisters!
