Question - Burch with Ab/Hyster Burch with Ab/Hyster

Hi,

I will be having a burch along with my hysterectomy. Can anyone tell me how long the catheter has to stay in? Some websites say you go home with it and it stays in for 10 days, others say it is taken out before you go home.

THANKS in advance for any replies. Needless to say this has me concerned.

Mary

Burch with Ab/Hyster

My catheter was removed the second day; the doctor wanted me to get out of bed & pee on my own. Starting from the first trip to the bathroom everything worked well; I had no problems. I guess it depends on your doctor or if there is some other problem. I would ask the doctor in advance so that is not one of the things you will be wondering about.

Burch with Ab/Hyster

Hi there I had the Burch repair with my abdominal hysterectomy and my catheter stayed in about 5 days. It will depend also on your own bladder. The only thing I really hated about it was the nurses where busy and didnt empty it enough and it would get quite full and they wanted me to walk around alot and I felt embarresed about that. It will be ok, I think Dr prefer you to try as early as possible to get your bladder working ..takecare debbiepxx

Burch with Ab/Hyster

I had a Burch with my abdominal hyst in July. I had my surgery on Tuesday. On Friday, they removed the catheter and I had to try to empty my bladder on my own. After I went to the bathroom they brought this ultasound looking machine in and scanned by bladder to see if I had completely emptied when I went to the bathroom. The doctor said that as long as I was able to completely empty my bladder I could go home.

Don't get discouraged. After the surgery I had several episodes when I was healing where I would wet myself on the way to the bathroom or wet the bed. When I felt the urge to GO I had to go right then or I would wet myself. With time that has all gotten better. I'm so much happier since having this done. It's so nice not to wet myself everytime I sneeze or cough.

I had a suprapubic tube instead of a catheter .. I wonder why, if it's just what my Dr. does?
Does anyone know why they might do one instead of the other?

TAH/BSO and burch

Hi. I had my TAH?BSO and burch done on 5/12/04. My large catheter was replaced with a smaller catheter the day of my surgery due to my extreme discomfort. The smaller one was removed on day 3. Ask your MD. It felt soooooo good to have the thing removed.

My best to you.

I too had a suprapubic catheter. I went hom with my catheter and had it removed in 14 days. I had to retrain my bladder all over again and once I didn't have any retainage, it was then removed.
