How do I get a hormone profile done?

I am having laparotomy surgery to remove two large cysts on Monday. Am hoping that these will be benign cysts. However, if malignant I will obviously undergo a hysterectomy.

I have seen a few posts talking about getting a hormone profile done in order to try & replicate it synthetically do I do that? I go in for some bloodwork tomorrow at the lab -- is this something I can request then? Does anyone know what this test or procedure is called?

The lab will only do the tests that are requested by your doctor. For pre-op stuff that is typically cbc tests to make sure that you do not have an infection that might make the procedure dangerous. If you would like to have your levels checked I suggest that you call your doctor and ask that these tests be performed. He/She should be willing and able to get you lab orders for that test.

Hope that is helpful.

How do I get a hormone profile done?

I spent years researching and answering every post on the hormone jungle (I know I'm not around anymore, so I thought I'd trot out my credentials )--

The question of getting tests ahead of time is debated but frankly it's a waste of time. To get accurate levels you need a battery of samples from different times of day and different times of the month. It's quite expensive and time-consuming and the results are of limited use. You actually can get the saliva testing without a doctor's order, but it takes a lot of time and money to get anything that makes sense.

Plus, you do not want to duplicate pre-menopausal levels. Hormone replacement is a misnomer and a term that isn't used as much in the medical journals. It's "hormone therapy" that has use. And for that, with the current guidelines, you want the lowest possible level that provides symptom relief. So, in fact, you don't want to duplicate what you had, you want something better!

Ovarian hormone level testing is most valuable if things are really skewed and then it's just a general guideline (testosterone is way low or progesterone is way high in balance with the others). It's not at all the precision that for instance thyroid levels can have.

Anyway, I know you want to do everything to have a successful outcome, but general health is probably more important than working hard on this aspect.
