Home Sweet Home

Hello sisters!

I came home on Wednesday morning following Monday morning surgery. All went well. It turns out I had a large (orange-sized) benign tumor on my left ovary, so I lost that one, but still have a very healthy right ovary. Cervix is intact and cauterized to prevent future bleeding. Adenomyosis was present, too.

I made the mistake of mentioning to the anesthesiologist that SOME narcotics make me itch, so I was put on Stadol for pain relief, which did NOT work. I spent several hours in pain before I was put on Demerol/Phenergan which DID work.

I have a very clean incision with below-the-skin stitches. My doc sews very well, and all the old scar tissue is gone (from C-section).

I had a bit of a problem after my first shower by getting light-headed and sweaty when I tried to figure out how those infernal gown snaps worked. I had to call a nurse to help me, and I'm not sure I could figure out those snaps when I'm NOT on painkillers.

One thing -- my abdominal binder was a lifesaver for me! I was able to walk fairly soon without having to hold my belly to try to keep everything somewhat in place. My doc was so impressed that he said he'll probably order an abdominal binder for all his C-section/hysterectomy patients.

All in all, I'm doing very well, and getting stronger by the hour. I'm very glad to have this behind me, and I must say I had envisioned everything as FAR worse than it was.

I'll be moving to the post-op board, but wanted to thank all of you for your support!

Welcome home Princess Inaminit ! It's good to hear that you're doing so well. Just remember to get plenty of rest and let yourself be pampered.

BTW, the binder you're referring to, is that the swelly belly band from this site. I keep debating with myself to get it or not. And, did you have a vertical or horizontal incision?

Hi, Empressnormi --

The abdominal binder is not the swelly belly band from this site. It's an adjustable stretchy corset-like thing (no whalebone ) which fastens with velcro, and fits from just under the breasts to just above my horizontal incision. It's trimmable if you don't want to bind an area that large. Just to be sure it doesn't rub my incision, I protect that with a sanitary pad, put on my panties and then fasten the binder over that.

I don't know if having a vertical incision would make a difference in how well the binder supports or if you could tolerate it, but it is completely adjustable to fit snuggly or "just barely". Mine has a tag which reads "Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a practioner licenced by applicable law to use or order the use of this device." Your doc can order it for you if you want to use it.

I don't have the swelly belly band because I have several gel coldpacks from previous surgery.

Thank you for that info. My dr did say that it would be a vertical incision. That's part of the reason why I haven't purchased the band from here. I know that some other sisters have asked about whether it would work well on vertical incisions, but I don't think there's been a big response.

Thanks again. I'll talk to my dr about it.
