what to drink day of op?

Hello all on a gorgeous holiday weekend......I am scheduled for surgery Tuesday at 12:30 pm. I know about fasting over night and nothing solid until after.............however, what could I drink that morning? Just water? Nothing?

what to drink day of op?

My surgery was scheduled for 11:30 am, only an hour ahead of your time. I was told NOTHING by mouth after midnight. The one exception they made is that I take a daily blood pressure medication so I was allowed to take that pill in the morning at my usual time, with just enough water to wash it down. I used a shot glass so I wasn't tempted to keep drinking.

The reason for my nothing by mouth after midnight was because I was going under general anesthesia. If you didn't get specific pre-op instructions about this, I would suggest calling the hospital before drinking anything on Tuesday.

P.S. - It'd be awesome if you update your profile to include your surgery date (puts you on the calendar) and where you're located. That helps people relate common ground with you when they post.

Ordinarily fasting for anesthesia, whether general or sedation, means "NPO" or nothing by mouth at all. This might be worth checking with your doc.

I've been told nothing at all to drink, not even water, including when brushing your teeth - rinse only, don't take a sip of water. I recently had a D&C with the twilight anesthesia (not general) and had these same instructions. When I went for that procedure, everybody I saw followed up with me to be sure that I didn't have anything to drink after midnight.

You should have nothing after midnight. The only reason why is incase your surgery gets bumped up. They want to make sure that you do not get sick from the anthes. My surgery was at 2:30 in the afternoon. Yes I was very thirsty, but it was worth not having anything to drink.

I was told no liquids or anything else after midnight before my surgery. I have other medication that I take so I was told to use only enough water to swallow my pills.
