Surgical Menopause
I'm scheduled for my LAVH on 6/15/2004 besides the pre-surgical/recovery jitters (which are making me nuts!!!) I'm very concerned about surgical menopause. Since I have severe endometreosis my doctor suggested taking both my ovaries w/ my hysterectomy. I've heard stories of how women are just "not the same" when they have instant surgical menopause. From past experiences, what should I expect? My doctor said he will put me on a low dose hormone. I'm in such conflict about being happy the the chronic pain I've experienced for years will hopefully be gone, but I'm so nervous about all that is involved prior and post surgery. Any advice?

Re: HRT
I had experienced some symptoms, but was put on low dose of estrogen and did considerably better. I think everyone is different with your age you are probably producing estrogen, you may wish to find out how much - it may indicate how much estrogen you will need. I had endo too and understand that you wish to get rid of it! My surgeon was the one who prescribed the HRT and he was an ONC/GYN. So, I trust his opinion. When I asked him if it would come back he said "if it does I will do the surgery for free". I think that indicates that he doesn't feel there is a strong probability. Good luck! You will still be you!

Surgical Menopause
Hi Patsbrat,
I had a TAH/BSO almost 5 weeks ago, so at 39 I went into surgical menopause. They gave me a hormone shot when I returned to my room from surgery that lasted pretty much a month long. They also gave me a prescription for low-dose Premarin (you'll be given something different, perhaps) which is a hormone replacement. I did have night sweats in the hospital but the nurses and my doctor asked me each morning about them and if I felt moody. They were on top of it in the hospital so that if I needed anything to deal with the night sweats or moodiness, they responded right away. I wasn't moody in the hospital.
Several days after I got home, I was out doing errands and had an experience in which I was NOT myself. Thankfully, I had already filled that Premarin prescription and took one as soon as I got home. It worked really well which surprised me because I had a very unusual experience and didn't think a low-dose pill would help, but it did! Now that the effects of the hormone shot have worn off, I take that Premarin daily and I'm my old self.
So....the very good news is you will be thoroughly 'set up' to deal with surgical menopause through some sort of hormone replacement (or other methods) if they think you'll be dealing with it. It's a very individual experience. The treatments are tailored to your specific needs. Please try not to be afraid of what hasn't happened yet. Instead, be assured that whatever comes down the pike will be handled by those who are taking care of you. They will work with you.
My experience is that it didn't take much to get me back to being myself again after that episode that quite honestly threw me for a loop! I felt that the more information pre op that they gave me about what to expect, the better prepared I felt. Reading this site will also fill in any blanks for you. I wish I had known about this site far before my surgery so that I could have had a type of 'road map' of sorts to follow in terms of recovery.
I'm glad you're posting already. Good luck on the 16th. And keep in touch. The ladies on this site are wonderfully supportive.

Surgical Menopause
Hi Pat,
I am 3 mnths post op and am 42. I had my ovaries removed because I was on the onset of menapause and had cycsts that were very painful.
I FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKs since the surgery. HRT, I know is controversial... but the quality of my life has changed dramatically for the better and is only getting better w/ each day. I am still not up to par w/ my exercise... but getting there.
If I had known that I would feel this great, I would have done it much much earlier.
Good luck to you in making your decisions .

Surgical Menopause
I am 35 years old and 4 weeks post-op
i had a TAH and on estrogen low dose ,but i have to go back to the docs at my 6 weeks to consider if it should be higher as i am having very bad symtoms of the menapause . because it was surgical like most sisters on here SHE told me that it would come on full blast and not like the natural one that most women after a certain age get it . hmmmm that made me feel better !!!!!!
and she was right i am having terrible flushes and sweats and also very low moods. spoke to her about that may as well have spoke to a brick wall to be honest.
love jen X

Surgical Menopause
Hi I had my surgery almost 5 weeks ago. I had endo and I am taking no hrt. I am just taking vitamins. I have only had 2 hot flashes and night sweats one night. I don't have any other symptoms. I feel pretty good. I am taking it one day at a time. I am walking and eating well. I am only 37. I think everyone's experiences are different. I am thankful I have had a pretty easy recovery. I have BCPs here that they gave me and the doctor told me to go ahead and see how I feel. I have decided if things get bad I will take them but so far so good..(knock on wood)
I am sure you will make whatever decesion that works for you. We are all different in our needs. good luck to you

Surgical Menopause
I am 2 weeks, 1 day post op. TAH/BSO. I am feeling really good, other than getting tired when I do a little to much.. I am on a patch now, and after first few days, feeling a little sick, I am fine. I also suffered from chronic pelvic pain, and bleeding, since I was 13, so for me I feel like it was an end to all that, and a new begining, I feel better than I have felt in years.....
