Very Bad News--Not Panicking Yet

The carboplatin I've been on since last August has definitely stopped working. My last three CA125's were 49, 97, and now 160. We have stopped it. Next week I have a CT scan and a consult the week after that. The Dr. says what I have going for me is that my onc 7 (liver panel) is perfect, I have no symptoms, that I feel good overall. I also gave him my "plan" today for what I would take and would not take chemo-wise and he will consult with the ovarian "chemo guru" at UW Clinical Cancer Center. He is not averse also to trying Tamoxifen as a way to keep off chemo a while--it has an 18% response which is what abuot what new chemos would be. I don't know if I'm ER+ or not. I haven't wasted a good panic yet. I'm saving it for when I really need it.

What does ER+ mean? I'm learning SO much here!

Ellen,

I'm sorry that you are having to deal with rising CA-125 levels--but the fact that you feel well and that your liver tests are good is a plus, I would think. I'm praying that your CT scans show everything to be normal, too.

Keep us informed...you're a real model and example to so many of us!

Blessings.

So, Ellen, now that we know what isn't working for you, let's move on to what will work for you... I'm glad your oncologist is going to be consulting other specialists in the field, too. Watching you so closely is obviously to your benefit. Your doctors can respond more quickly.

I'm glad you're not ricocheting into "panic-mode". Try to focus on staying positive. Your situation reminds me of an angel I met during my second chemo treatment. She told me her story (it was a long journey) and from time to time, when her CA-125 numbers would creep up, she'd have to start up another round of chemo. She'd always come in with guns blazing, look her doctor straight in the eyes and say, "I'm gonna keep coming till YOU get it right!!"

You're in my prayers, Ellen.

Ellen-

I'm praying that you can keep that panic on a shelf indefinitely. You have some encouraging signs there, and I hope your CT scan is clean. Please let us know how things turn out!

So sorry about that darn CA125 doing an upward climb. I know the ovca chemo guru at UW will find you just the right chemo to chase those cancer critters away. It is good news that your liver panel is normal and you are feeling good.

This disease is sure one battle after another for you. It reminds me of the saying "Evertime I can make ends meet, somebody moves the ends". May your ends never move again.

You are always in my prayers. Hang in there.

for JoRaeMi: ER+ refers to Estrogen Receptor Positive. ER+ tumors respond to Tamoxifen.

Ellen - I can only offer hugs and admire your attitude. I am glad you are remaining calm - and it sounds as if your ONC listens to you - glad the liver panel is good - that's important.
Hugs to you -
