any teachers out there?

I am having a hard time thinking of a gift idea for my DS's teacher. She has been absolutely wonderful, to the point of offering to give my son a ride home each day after my surgery.
She is going through a really rough time right now, and is taking some sick time off. We think that she is in the process of separating from her husband. She has no children of her own, and she has been a sweetheart, so my heart is breaking for her.
I had bought her a gift which might not be appropriate any more. Does anyone know what kind of gifts are appreciated by teachers, especially one who is going through such a rough time?
Or anyone else know what is appreciated at a time like this? I adore this teacher as she has such a generous .Thanks for any ideas you might have.

You did not mention the grade/subject(s) that your son's teacher teaches, but most teachers appreciate gift certificates to bookstores, restaurants, movie theaters, department stores, etc. If you know of her special interests or hobbies (like birdwatching, gardening, cooking, etc.) you could get a gift that pertains to it. It is quite meaningful to teachers to be thanked and shown appreciation for what they do. (My husband & I are both teachers.) I am glad that your son has a wonderful teacher & I pray that she will be alright with whatever she is dealing with in her life at this time.

I also forgot to mention in my previous reply that if you know of something your son's teacher really wants/needs for her classroom you could get it for her. Teachers do end up buying many things out of pocket for their classrooms. It could be something directly to benefit her (i.e., a canvas director chair, a stool to put her feet up on when she is at her desk) or something she needs for the kids like books, computer programs, games, etc.

any teachers out there?

Thanks housewren,
My son is 12, and is in Grade 6 here in Ontario. This teacher is his core teacher- he has her for almost all subjects, with a few exceptions such as French, phys ed, computers, etc.
She had loved her garden at home and her cottage. I had bought something for her cottage, but I am worried that it may have to be sold in the event of a divorce.
Thanks for the great tips. She has been exceptional, staying late at school, and organizing many wonderful and educational field trips. The kids love her, and I can understand why. Thanks again for your help..

Aurora.............................maybe you could still give her the gift you had, but also give her a thank-you card with a personal message in it from you thanking her for the extra care that she has given to your son since your surgery. Another nice thing for you to do is maybe take her out for a nice morning/ afternoon tea (without your DS) or put on a nice tea at your home. She maybe able to open up to you about her problem's seeing as you have opened up to her about your surgery. She sound's like a very SPECIAL teacher, just wish that all our children could have a caring teacher like that. Let us know how it all goes? Kay

Thanks Kay.
I may do that (take her out to tea). She is moving to a different school next year, along with another one of my favourite teachers. My son is moving on to middle school next year, so I told them both I may follow them to their new school to volunteer. It may be easier for her to open up when she is not my son's teacher anymore, and she is in a new neighbourhood.
Thank you and to housewren for your thoughtful ideas. Good teachers are a real blessing to children, and their families.
