Shaving......

Hello Everyone,

I had read a post a while back about shaving before surgery. Well along with numerous other women, I already do this. But one of the "tips" was to use a gel or even aftershave for women. Well I had bought this shaving gel called "Bikini Zone". I had to buy it and try it out before the surgery actually got here, on June 23rd. I bought it Thursday, I used it this morning, and oh Man.....it is wonderful. Usually I get really irritated and bumpy. As for this stuff, it really works, it makes shaving alot easier as well, doesn't burn......and it doesn't leave any little red bumps or any irritation.

I just wanted to let you pre-op ladies know, that it is some good stuff!!

Shaving......

I did a bit of reseach on this whole issue of shaving and have found that it is falling into disfavour. Most hospitals are now using clippers instead of razors and then only immediately before surgery. In fact my nurse friend strickly forbade me from shaving myself as she said the tiny almost microscopic nicks you get from shaving are a leading cause of surgical site infections. These little nicks get little infections that you can't even see and they just wait for your big incision. She said at her hospital that they wait until the OR and the OR nurse will arrange to clip the surgery site only usually when you are out.

She did say that since I wax that I should wax no closer than week before surgery either. I am getting full brazillian a week before I go in and that way I can forget about hair for a few weeks.

Shaving......

I would STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT shave prior to surgery. I have heard of women on this site having their surgeries cancelled because of small nicks they got shaving a few days before.

You should really check with your doc first. They can advise you how far in advance you should stop shaving. (((Trinity2004))) had a good suggestion there with the waxing thing, but I'd still check with the doc.

At my preop this week, the nurse said definitely do NOT shave.

Shaving......

For my surgery, the nurse used clippers, only about an inch wide swatch was removed right at the bikini line. I'm presuming that the decision whether to trim or not was made at the time that it was determined that my scheduled TVH had to become a TAH. I wasn't awake for this part of the preparations.

During recovery, I did a bit of trimming in order to even things out just so my undies wouldn't grab when I was on my walks outdoors.

Definitely check with your hospital prior to doing any last minute shaving.

i think i am very happy for your advice definately for AFTER. gosh i hate those bumps. and swimsuit time being here and all.

however, i guess you'd better ask your doc about shaving. mine said no also.

thanks, though, for the tip!

Shaving......

As has already been mentioned, even if you shave regularly now, due to the possibility of nicks, etc, and yes, the possibility of having surgery postponed, be sure to get the ok from your DR before you shave more than a few days or a week before surgery.

Shaving......

Thank you ladies for replying to my post. I appreciate the insight on this. My doc never mentioned it to me when I went in for my exam to decide on the type of hysterectomy that was to be done, I was fresh shaven then, but he still didn't mention it. I appreciate you ladies letting me in on the possiblities of infections, etc from the nicks and stuff. I will definately call monday morning and speak w/the nurse about shaving prior to surgery. As my surgery is in 10 days!

Again, thank you ladies!!!!!
