Miracle Hair Growth Secrets Anyone?

Evenin' ya all,

Last chemo was April 28.
My eyelashes have just now decided to come out over the past week!!!
I hope they come back fast!!

Now for my question. I am growing hair. Looks like a 'five o'clock shadow'

Anyone got any good hair growth secrets? Like , something you rub on your head or something??? please???? Magic words, Anything!!!!

I'm sooo tired of wearing caps. It's too hot here for wigs, and the caps aren't much better but I can't take a chance getting sunburned even if I get up the nerve to go without the cap! As soon as my scalp isn't shining through, I'm done with the caps.

Also, my scalp is dry and flaky. What do you think I should use on it?

I don't know any secrets, but the good news is you should start having noticeable hairgrowth from here on out. I started going without a cap at about 5 weeks post chemo. My hair had continued to grow during chemo, but was pretty thin. So as soon as I got the "5 o'clock shadow" thing going, with a definative hairline, I lost the cap. The chemo growth was about 1 1/2 inches so that made it long enough that I felt fine about going without.

I just had a haircut tonight. It was looking pretty shaggy over my ears and the chemo growth was snow white so I cut about an inch of that off and what's left looks darker. I've had the most trouble with my left eyebrow. Just a little bit of it is dark enough to be easily visible. Oh well... I happy with anything at this point.

Hope you're feeling well otherwise!

Hi ya Limbo

I just might lose that cap in the next week or so then.

I'm doing pretty good. Just alot of the usual junk. Touchy intestinal system mainly from the radiation. Evidently some muscle and nerve damage in my legs, especially the left hip, evidently from the radiation too

I go Monday for a bone density test. But I kinda took that as good news. I mean, if Doc is worried about my bones, he must be planning on me living long enough to have a problem with them????

Hope you are doing great!

Are you taking B vitamins for the nerve problems? My gyn/onc said that nerves take a long time to heal but vitamins B2, B6 and B12, 50 mgs per day, will help speed recovery.

Glad to see you here and to know that you are healing.

Hi Nancy,

Congratulations on finishing your last chemo treatment.

How I remember that day. I wanted my hair to be back in the next day. Of course it wasn't but it will be back in soon.

It took me 5 months after my last treatment to actually be comfortable and shed the wig. Actually within three months I did have a full head but it was not long enough for my likings.

It has been one year and four months since my wigs were put into retirement (hopefully forever) and since that time I have had numerous haircuts, hair colorings and hair thinnings. I always had very healthy bodied, thick, dirty blonde (which I highlighted) fairly straight hair. It came back curly, black, (no grey thank goodness) and even thicker than before.

I always say that my grew back with a vengence and yours will too!!

(((Nancy))) on your hair starting to come back! I haven't been through chemo (at least not yet, there's always a first time for everything)... and it's not really a secret, but I have had good luck with Shen Min Activator. It's a liquid in a squirt bottle; you put 10-20 drops on your scalp a couple of times a day and massage it in. It does contain a very tiny bit of natural progesterone, so you might want to check with your DR to make sure you'd be allowed to use it if your DR has said no HRT.

You can find Shen Min Activator, as well as their other products (various other hair care topical products plus vitamins), by doing a google search on Shen Min. Here's a list of what's in the Activator, in case you want to ask your DR if it's OK:
Purified Water, Propylene Glycol, Jojoba Oil, Herbal Blend Hair Complex (Henna Extract, Horsetail Extract, Nettle Extract, Chamomile Extract, Rosemary Extract, Tormentil Extract, Bordock Extract, Honey Extract, Golden Seal Root Extract), Lecithin, PEG-40 Stearate, Steareth 20, Cholesterol, Trichopeptide (Hydrolyzed Keratin), Lysine Carboxymethyl Cysteinate, Progestoplex (a proprietary blend of Progesterone and Copper Petide Complex), Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopherol Acetate, He Shou Wu Extract, Saw Palmetto Extract, Nettle Extract, Propyl Gallate, Biotin, Polysorbate 20, Chamomile Extract, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.
I hope this helps!

I've also heard that the Nioxin products are good for "unbalanced" scalp conditions. We used it when my DD was literally pulling her hair out (a nervous thing a couple of years ago) and developed a bald spot right at the crown. She's always struggled with terrible eczema, etc, too, and constant scalp flaking. Nioxin worked, as did Aveda's burdock root shampoo.

Keeping the hat, however, is a good idea through the summer anyway. Sun isn't the greatest thing for a recovering scalp! What about a straw hat (perhaps with flowers, or a bow)? I love mine!

Hi Nancy
Congratulations on finishing chemo.
My last chemo was late Jan and by June I could go without my hat sporting a short hair do. Please be careful though for the risk of sunburn on that new scalp.

It will be exciting to see what your hair will be like. My came back still fine but a darker brown with no grey. It was curly but became straight after 6 months or so.

I didn't put anything on my scalp because I felt that I had had enough chemicals for awhile. I think that a scalp shampoo would be safe, though.

I also have used Nioxin (I had a horrible hair loss from hormonal issues after one of my pregnancies). My hair stylist at the time told me that they were using it with adults and children who had had chemo to facilitate hair growth and that they had excellent results with many people. You might like to check with your doc. It has nor hormones or anything, and only some salons sell it. You can check their website for locations that sell it (Wal-Mart does, for example).

Good luck!
