Epidural vs. general anestesia

Hi friends,

I just have a question I thought I'd through out there regarding anastesia. I went for my pre op blood work etc. yesterday. I'm scheduled for surgery on 6/22. I met with the anestesiologist and told him that I would really prefer an epidural instead of general. He said he didn't recommend it because if anything changed and they had to put me under general, it would be diffucult to change part way through.

I then met with my Dr, whom is a pelvic specialist and she said that it was up to me and that she would honor my request, that she would however make the decision to put me under general if at any time during the surgery she thought I might require it.

Have any of you Princesses had a HAV with an epidural and if so, what was your opinion of the experience.

Hope to get some feed back on this one. My date is coming up so soon and this is really the only thing uncertain about.

Thanks very much for your input, I really appreciate it.
Carol

epidural vs general

I was totally put out cold. I didnt wanna know what they were doing. Soon as the versed took hold they could have turned me upside down and backwards and hung me by my toes for all i cared. I would never go epidural because i have had a few people i know get paralzed from spinal blocks and get massive migrains after because they sat up beyond 30degrees too soon. But each of us is different. I have seen women who swear bye it and were out the next day home. But i have never had really bad side effects from general just some nausia and they gave me lots of no puke juice in my iv so i felt fine ... was in lala land for 24 hours cuz i had a morophine pump at my disposal for pain... Its a good thing :-). Next day off the pump onto vicodin. One thing i do recommend is that you should tell them to give you a shot of morophine right after you come back too because the pump takes a little while to build up in your system... So prime the pump so to speak.
Good luck heal fast.

Epidural vs. general anestesia

My surgery is on the same day as yours, and I just had pre op today. My doctor is giving me a spinal, a little stronger than an epideral, and putting me out. He said this will help alot with the first day of pain. I have had 4 spinals already, so one more is no biggie. If it will cut down on the iv drugs, I am all for it. Good Luck and I will see you on the other side! Diana

Epidural vs. general anestesia

I had an epidural and twilight drugs. I was in & out of it the whole time but didn't feel a thing.

My only problem with the epidural was that afterwards for 3 days my back was killing me! While in the hospital I would call the nurse for pain meds for my back!

Epidural vs. general anestesia

I was put out completely, but was very alert and almost "high" the day of surgery. Mine was at 7:30 a.m. and by 11:30 I was WIDE awake and was up and walking by 3 p.m. I had very little pain, hardly even used the morphine pump at all. In the past I have been in lala land for at least 24 hours, but not this time. I asked for nausea meds before I even went into surgery and they started me on Zophraim (sp?) in pre-op. I would not have done this any other way, but then the general anesthesia did not have any negative side effects in my case. I wish you the best, no matter what you decide.
