1 week and pain worse

It's now been one week since my TAH and yesterday and today have been the worst since coming home. I think I did too much yesterday (mostly just a lot of little things that added up) and felt awful last night, including being nauseated. I slept OK but this morning the increased discomfort continues, along with increased swelling. I'm getting concerned because I HAVE to take 2 Lortabs every 4 hours while I'm up or it gets much worse. The worst pain is my in my lower left abdomen. I'm really taking it easy today, but now worried about running out of pain meds - I think I have about 16 left. I put a call in to the Dr. but feel like such a wimp. I thought I'd be one of these who are just needing Advil by now. Anybody else feeling this way?

1 week and pain worse

Hi Mimi,

You're not a wimp, sweetie. You just had major surgery and have hundreds of internal sutures. Pain is normal at this stage. You're probably feeling it more as the anesthesia effects leave your system.

Just be sure to take it easy. You shouldn't be doing anything other than resting; taking short, frequent walks, and drinking lots of water.

Here's a list of do's and don'ts which can help remind you of what you shouldn't be doing yet: Do’s and Don’ts

You might also want to give your doctor a call, as any new or unusual pain or symptoms should always be reported.

1 week and pain worse

You arent a wimp at all. I was in more pain the second week than the first - perhaps nerves are reconnecting. I would do something I shouldnt - like bending over picking things up and then that night and all the next day I would be in pain.

My pain meds ran out on Friday. I wanted to call the doc for a refill, but my DH says he was concerned about dependency, and that I should try Advil for the weekend. Advil does absoluately NOTHING for me. So today I am without pain meds, cant drive yet (too painful). No one is home to go get anything for me.

I wonder - does Aleve work better than Advil for any of you?

Im in my third week - which seems like my second week. I'm trying to be patient waiting for the big day when I feel like myself. Perhaps its a more gradual thing. I have to be thankful because I am recovering - but its slow going for a hyper person like me.

1 week and pain worse

The nurse called me back and said it was perfectly normal to still have to take this much pain med. She also suggested taking Advil 2 hours after the Lortab and alternating back and forth like that. The Advil will do more for the inflammation.

I think Aleve is the same thing (Ibuprofen?) as Advil, but longer-acting. Not 100% sure about that. If you're still hurting I'd call your doctor. There may be something "in between" Advil and the "hard stuff" that would be good to use.

Definately not a wimp!! I'm 13 days post-op, and I'm still taking Darvacet every 4 hours. Went without yesterday due to father's day celebration, and boy could I tell the difference by last night! So, this morning back to the meds. I just called in my second refill and since my doc only authorized one refill, the pharmacy has to contact the doc for approval. I hope he approves it, because the motrin doesn't seem to do much of anything!!

I hope your pain gets better soon!!

1 week and pain worse

Hi Like you the pain is worse the last few days then before. In fact I ended up in Emergency last night cause I threw up what little I have in my system and ended up in major pain. The dr said it was from my system trying to wake up. I hope that you feel better soon. I believe that Aleve works better for me but they told me I can't have Aleve so Tylenol 3 for me. *hug* to you and hope that you start feeling better.
