recipe for stool softening

This recipe was on the post op articles site. It is really funny, because I used to be a speech therapist in nursing homes, and this is exactly what they gave people if they didn't have a BM after a few days.
My DH went to the store for me, and looked everywhere and couldn't find prunes, prune juice, dried prunes or canned prunes. Arrgggh. I know they are all there, he just can't find anything!
I'll have to go myself later, or I could call and ask them to leave them at the front when he goes back again. He was too embarrassed to ask them where they were!

I was (and still am) taking the stool softeners, and then took prune juice when that didn't work (prune juice had worked like a charm pre-op from vicodin-constipation). However, when that didn't work, the nurse suggested Milk of Magnesia, and that did the trick. From then, just took MoM once again, and the stool softeners, and plenty of liquids.

Posted on another thread was an idea for a sitz bath. Also try a rubbing a warm wet washcloth on your perineum (sp) and anus - it can sometimes help get things going. And I have found that when it is there but just won't budge, a little walk will many times get things moving.

All Bran Buds! Try it for a few days, you will be cured! Mix with dried cranberries or cherries. If you don't care for the cereal, mix it with Raisin Bran, Cracklin Oat Bran or Grape Nuts. This is amazing stuff. Make sure you buy the Buds, the regular All Bran in my opinion is a little hard to swallow...

I had that problem too. I still have IBS so I have to be careful what I eat. But Prune Juice and Bran worked for me!

Hope you feel better soon...and everything comes out alright!

If you can get it down without gagging, Milk of Magnesia is definitely my choice. I chase it with some grapefruit juice. It doesn't give me any of the gas or cramping like laxatives. I fought constipation for a long time, but no more thanks to good 'ol MOM. Ladies, if you haven't tried it- Please do. I think you will be "pleasantly" surprised!!!
