Post Treatments Pain

Me again

In preparation for a phone call tomorrow morning to my rad/onc, I am going to use you all as a sounding board to see if I make any sense.

Ok. Last radiation treatment was January 5th. Last chemo (high dose, two drugs) was April 28.

Stomach and intestinal pain, gas, bloating,.....my gosh, does it ever get better or quit? And about once a week, sudden with no warning or pain---and no time to get to the bathroom---diarrhea.

At least once a day I am doubled over with a burning stomach crampy pain. then my stomach does this godforsaken gurgle and the pain goes away. This may repeat 10 to 15 times.

Same with the intestines. Pain, then weird sounds like someone pulled the plug on a bathtub and you can almost follow the path of the sound of the monster gurgle. Then pain quits. No BM....just pain, noise and then gas.

Now, they have me taking daily: two Tums, two prescription strength Pepcid, 3 to 4 Gas-X, ..... then I flunked my bone density test and they want me to take Fosamax which very plainly says on the patient insert that it can cause or worsen stomach problems and ulcers.
I haven't started taking it until I check with my rad/onc. It is my gyn/onc that prescribed it.

I think I can honestly say that my lingering problems are probably radiation induced. Unless some of you know something about chemo also causing these problems, if so, please tell me.

And oh the gas. The other night my cat actually reached over, slapped me in the face, stood up and left the bed.
Now that's BAD!!

Thanks for any input you can give me....Oh yes, I had whole abdominal radiation, not just the pelvic area but up high over the stomach also.

Nancy,

I completely understand what you are going through. I had the same symptoms after my radiation and chemo treatments. It seemed worse after the treatments were over. The only thing that helps is time. It took me at least 4 months to stop feeling so sick to my stomach. The pain was so bad, I did a lot of praying because that was all that seemed to help.

When I asked my radiologist about it, he said that it is completely normal for the body to react this way and eventually it will go away. Unfortunately, it doesn't happen overnight.

I know things will continue to get better for you. REMEMBER never to lose Faith. You will get through this!

Oh Patricia, thank you for the hope!

I will just keep hanging in here and trying to live as normal as possible.

Are you better now?

I hope so

I am doing much better. I have a doctor appointment tomorrow for a routine Pap test. Although treatments have been over for a year, it doesn't get any easier to go to these appointments. I guess I have "Cancer Head" again.

I will keep you in my prayers. Don't ever forget that we are survivors. It's the tough times in our life that make us appreciate the good times so much more. There is a positive side to this horrible disease--we have a real appreciation for life.

God Bless you,

Yes, I understand. My first 3 mo. checkup will be in September. I am sure as the date gets closer I will get quite nervous about it.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers tomorrow.

Post Treatments Pain

Dear Nancy,
My last radiation treatment was the second week of November and it has only been last last month or so that I can eat most anything with out the fear of stomach upsets. My main problem was with extreme gas that would actually cause me to have a headache. I never could figure what triggered the gas. Some days were almost OK and others I could eat very little without pain. I stll don't eat very large amounts of food at one time but have been able to even eat out without symptoms.
I had my first appointment with the rad/onc last Tuseday and her last words were "See you in October". WHEEE

Maude Rose, that is wonderful!!!
I am to go back in September

My rad/onc called in Bentyl. I'm to take it four times a day. Hubby got it home to me at 5:30 and I immediately took one. I was in such pain that it hurt to stand, to lay, I was just about beside myself. Was this way all day.
Within 20 minutes of taking the pill, the pain was gone.
Now here it is 9:30 and it has started up again. So I just now took another one.
Keep your fingers crossed for me

It is the most horrible cramping and gas pains I've ever felt except during chemo.
