hot flashes and HRT

I had a hysterctomy for cervical CA but before the hysterectomy I had radiation which killed my ovaries anyhow and put me in menopause. I am on HRT and I want to know how long the symptoms last until they go away and you don't need the HRT. I know 80 year old women don't have the hot flashes. I had the radiation in 1994 and the hysterectomy after so I have been having the hot flashes since then and I want to know if I am going to have them until I am about 50 when I would natually be through this. Also, I have heard mixed thoughts on whether or not being in menopause makes your thinking fuzzy. Since the menopause started I have a harder time concentrating and I domn't know if it is from this but sometimes I am so scattered and I wasn't before. Maybe it is just from the emotional rollercoaster of having the cancer and I was diagnosed on the day my daughter was born so there was a lot of emotional stuff going on. If anyone has any info or comments please write. Thanks

hot flashes and HRT

Hurried...I had tah/bso on 11/08 for uterine cancer.I am 51 and was certain I was going to be the only person at 65 standing in line to sign up for soc sec wearing a maxi pad! I had been having peri-menopausal symptoms for 12yrs, but the bleeding never stopped or lessened in frequency. My mother is 72 and still has hot maybe there are some 80 yr olds that do,too. I am muddling through the hormone issue, too. I was put on a patch the day after surgery and so far that has helped the hot flashes and night sweats...still having some crying jags. The Dr. wants to wean me off the patch because now I am at risk for vaginal and breast cancer. I have been exploring the alternatives because I do not want osteoporosis and other diseases of the aged due to lack of estrogen. Dr. said she will discuss other options at 6wk ck up as right now what I need to do is heal, rest and let body adjust to these changes first. The brain fog is normal...I have lots and lots of it..and it comes and goes...I start conversations with dh and then go blank...he now asks me what time I would like him to come back for the rest of the!!! If I get any good hrt info in the mean time I will post it for you. I read the Hormone Jungle here at Hystersisters but am still attempting to put the pieces together...some days they fit better than others. Keep your chin up...the ladies here will help us get through all this!

kaatie, Thanks for the reply. Maybe I will be 80 and still having hot flashes. I guess it's a small price to pay for surviving the cervical cancer. I hope that you are doing well and God Bless
