Paps and Hysterectomy

Does anyone have information on why doctors recommend that women who have had hysterectomies continue to have yearly PAPs? Does any data support this? Does the PAP tell them if you have vaginal cancer? What is the actual recommendation for pelvic exams and PAPs after hysterectomy?
Thanks for your help.

Paps and Hysterectomy

The paps are done to check for vaginal cancer. Although it is not a common thing, we still need to be faithful with our paps. Some women have them done once a year, some have them twice a year, and some even more often than that. A lot of it depends on why you had the hysterectomy in the first place. I know that it is so annoying to go to the GYN for a Pap, but we really do owe it to ourselves to be checked out!

Paps and Hysterectomy

If you search this forum for vaginal cancer, you'll find a post that demonstrates why it's important. A friend of a sister had not had Pap tests after her hysterectomy for years and by the time the vaginal cancer was discovered it was advanced. If your hysterectomy was for cervical cancer, it's obviously important because cervical and vaginal cancers are related, but even if it wasn't, it's the only way to detect vaginal cancer early. I think if you have several clean ones and you didn't have cervical cancer, then you can spread it out across several years. It's such an easy way to buy a lot of insurance that there's no reason not to have them.
