meeting new people

hey ladies,

my dh and i moved to alabama for his work, things there are going good. but since we are new here i would like to meet some of the people here, any ideas? the complex that we live in is mostly military so there is always someone moving. and we are a little older than most here i'm 41 and dh is 46, they either don't have or have small children. we live near an army base so i was wondering if there are any army sisters out there with any ideas? hugs to all. debbie

well, in certain areas of the country, "church" is the big thing. i am not a church goer, and where i live, unless you go to church, it's very hard to meet new friends.

i'd recommend checking out volunteer opportunities, concerts, and be the one to initiate. my former SIL & family moved to AL, but never made one friend because everyone called them "yankee" and "hillbillies".

oh well! i wish you luck!

When we moved overseas (not with the military or diplomatic corps!).... I found a Toastmaster's club and that was a great way to find an instant group of friends--- or at least kind acquaintances who later developed into very good friends.

I had been a member in my home town, and it was lovely to find this group.

I also joined some ex-pat groups, but my guess is that is not an option in your case!

I suggest finding a volunteer group or some kind of group that focusses on something you are interested in for itself. -- a course? join a gym?

I know it is hard moving to a new place -- good luck!
