I did not tell my Mother....
In fact she still doesn't know. She was 92 years old at the time (now 94), in another state, and we had lost my younger sister to stomach cancer 4 months earlier. She was having a difficult time dealing with that, and after talking it over with my siblings, we decided it wasn't necessary to burden her further. I don't regret not telling her at all. I think it is for the best.
As for friends, there are some I told that sadly I have never heard from again. That still hurts a little.
