OVCA Relapse???

I am asking this question on behalf of my mother. On September 6, 2002, she underwent TAH/BSO which included removal of omentum, appendix, three lymph nodes--two of which were malignant, bowel reconstruction--fourteen inches of colon, and removal of a large tumor just next to the liver; there was also cancer on the diaphram.
After surgery, she underwent nine cycles of chemotherapy--triple doublet treatment, which ended in March, 2003. Her CA125 decreased to normal range after the first two cycles. She had a positive second look surgery showing there was still cancer remaining (although very small) in April, 2003.
In June, 2003, she began taking tamoxifen. She has not relapsed or had any recurrence. Her CA125 has remained around 13-15 since second look.
Does anyone know if tamoxifen can in some women destroy remaining cancer after positive second look?
Does anyone know anyone in this position?
Is it really just a matter of time before relapse occurs?
Who do people think?

OVCA Relapse???

Hi Sweet Daughter

75% of all women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are stage III or IV. Most women having debulking surgery followed by chemotherapy of taxol and carboplatin will go into remission.
But then 70 to 90% of women in these stages will have a recurrence of the cancer. (Johns Hopkins stats)
Tamoxifen does help greatly in a small percentage of women.
It certainly sounds as though you Mom falls into that group.
I understand tamoxifen is very well tolerated.
Best wishes to you both.

OVCA Relapse???

My doctor is becoming convinced that exercise is an important key in preventing recurrence. He has started telling his patients to work up a sweat at least three times a week. The reason this is important is that my doctor is very reticent to say that he's seen anything work in terms of preventing recurrence. I pressed him a lot, asking if he'd seen any trends in what the non-recurring people do vs. the recurring people. And he said unfortunately, no. Until just recently, when he started saying that exercise seems to be involved in the non-recurrence folks.

I think diet also plays a part. You can search on "SirenSong" to find a lot of information that I've posted on this topic. I research it quite a lot. I certainly have my chocolate binges. But my daily eating is usually pretty good. Not perfect. But certainly a million times better than what it was before I was diagnosed.

If you mom eats anything sweet, have her pair it with a protein (e.g., if she has an apple, she should eat some dry-roasted ruts, or if she has a dessert, she should eat chicken or nuts or seeds, etc.). This helps prevent insulin spikes. There's a lot more, but much of it can be found by doing a search on my name. Please PM me if you want more information.
