With Blood Clots in Leg when is it save to get off Coumadin???

I had LAVH/BSO with large posterior rectocele repair on 1/16/02. I had all kinds of problems for about a year and then I started to feel good again. This message board was my lifesaver then.

Now I have a new problem and I am hoping I can find some answers here.
In February of this year I had a diagnostic cardiac catheterization and they found 90% blockage in the main artery and inserted a stent. I then had complications with the stent while in the hospital and I had a massive heart attack. After 3 days at home, I developed blood clots in my right leg. I have been on Coumadin ever since for the blood clots. My last ultrasound on the leg was in April and it showed that the clots were still there.
My question is:
1.) At what point do I know that the blood clots are gone (do they ever go away completely)??
2.) Has anybody had any other tests other than ultrasound?
3.) I am also wondering at what time the Dr. makes the decision that it is save to be off the Coumadin?

I would be so greatful if I could find some ansers.
Thanks, Renate.

With Blood Clots in Leg when is it save to get off Coumadin???

It was my hematologist's decision to stop the coumadin. Although I have a predisposition to blood clots, it was my first one and I've had none since. Should I have another, I'll be on coumadin for life. However, I have a brother who had a blood clot in his arm, and his doctor has him on coumadin for life.

I don't know of any other tests besides the ultrasound to check for blood clots in the leg. Mine never dissolved completely, and the remnants adhered to the wall of the vein and will probably remain there with no danger.

I'm not sure exactly what factors figure into the decision to stop coumadin. Your doctor should be able to answer any questions pertinent to your own case.

Thanks Catherine, for your reply. I am so glad you were able to get off the Coumadin. I absolutely do not like being on it. I am having a lot of problems with nose bleeds and lightheadedness, etc.
I have another question for you. Does the leg feel totally normal now or do you still have occasional pain or swelling, etc.??
Thanks, Renate.

With Blood Clots in Leg when is it save to get off Coumadin???

Are you having regular blood tests? The entire year I was on coumadin, I had to have a weekly blood test to determine my prothrombine time. Several times I had to ease up on my dosage, once because of internal bleeding.

I suffer from post phlebitic syndrome. My leg is swollen and the lower part tends to be quite red. I have some pain in the leg and it is nearly always achey, but I have a job where I stand all day, and I'm sure that doesn't help.

Not everyone has lingering leg problems after a DVT. Hopefully your dr. can give you more information. I do think you need to address the lightheadedness and nosebleed situation with him/her. During the time I was on coumadin I had only one nosebleed and it was the worst one I ever had. I didn't think it would ever stop.

BTW, my clot wasn't caused by my hysterectomy, but from a genetic predisposition to clots called Factor V Leiden. The hysterectomy was a catalyst, but didn't actually cause it. Actually, my recovery from the hysterectomy was quite uneventful.

I hope you don't have to be on coumadin much longer.

With Blood Clots in Leg when is it save to get off Coumadin???

HI Catherine,

I read your reply to this post and I have some questions for you. I also have a predisposition to clotting. Two years ago I had a PE, clots in my lungs. No clots were ever found in my legs. I cannot take birth control pills. I have problems with fibroids and ovarian cysts (my left ovary is gone due to surgery for a dermoid cyst) and now my doc wants to do a hysterectomy with oophorectomy. Do you have your ovaries? If not, can you take hormone replacement therapy? Nobody seems to know anything in this small town I live in and I would love to hear from somebody who is in the same boat as me. Also, I am only 30 years old... Thanks, stacyr
