Confused at Pre-Op

My Pre-op was last Friday 13th. They did the usual stuff, took urine sample and was sent for a blood test but I didn't have good communication with the doctor. He was not my Surgeon & it was hard to understand anything he was saying. I had to ask him three or four times what he had said every time he spoke to me. This alone made me feel awful. Because of this, I didn't bother to ask the questions I wanted to.
I then went to have my blood taken, but then they saw the surgery date & said I couldn't have it done because it was too soon. They only keep the blood for five days, so now I have to go back tomorrow morning. Plus I have to have a ECG & a chest X-ray because I have Asthma & have been stressed out so it has made it worse.
I had an unpleasant experience the last time I was put to sleep & am not looking forward to it again this time. Admitedly i'm probably more nervouse of the Anaesthetic.
I just feel stressed that I haven't had my questions answered. I get a lot of information from you wonderful ladies but the hospitals do things a little differently here in the UK. You Ladies seem to go in on the same day as your surgery. (Wish it could be the same for me) but I have to go in the day before my operation, which will add more to the nerves.
Just really annoyed that my pre-op was not what I was expecting it to be.
I even managed to get my husband to go with me, so that he would have a better understanding of my operation, but he got nothing from it.
Sorry...just had to vent a little.

I'm sorry you had a communication problem with your doctor. I know you will be fine...truly, the waiting is the hardest part! You are right, all hospitals and doctors are different. Try to relax as much as possible. I know you are nervous and you have every right to be. I hope your asthma doesn't give you any problems. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers that all goes well for you and you have a wonderful and pampered recovery! Hang in there!

I had one of my surgeries done while living in the UK. It is different from the US, but not so different as you might think. My advice would be to call your surgeon to speak with him. If that's not possible, call the surgery unit where you'll be, and ask to speak to the Sister. She should be able to answer most if not all of your questions. If there is anything she doesn't know, or doesn't feel right advising you on, she'll be able to put you in touch either with the consultant on staff, or possibly speak with your surgeon.

There is no reason you should be going into this without having your questions answered.

Also, since you'll go in the night before, you'll probably get a nice sleeping tablet, and maybe even some "nerve" medicine.

Good luck!
