Ovarian Cysts?

Hey Ya'll !!!

I'm new to this forum, so I'm still navigating my way around the site!!! I have a question that may seem silly, yet I'd like some opinions on the matter (if ya'll don't mind?!?).... I had my hysterectomy (TAH) in July of '03.... I still have my left ovary, and a small "part" of my right ovary...

I have two children, had had my tubes tied (in 1998, after a C-Section with my daughter), and had "normal" pap results up until I was 33 y/o (2002)... I had my first abnormal pap in Oct of '02..... and had a battery of continuous tests, sono's and biopsies every other month, until I finally had the TAH ~ exactly 8 months, to the day, of my first abnormal pap... The "reasoning" behind the TAH was positive tests results for cervical cancer... It WAS contained, AND was successfully removed via several biopsies... I diligently fought the notion that a TAH was necessary ~ however, after seeking 4 different opinions from 4 different specialists, (2 men, 2 women) with them ALL making the same recommendation ~ I went with the TAH...

I moved out of state shortly after having my hysterectomy...So? I have a NEW doctor, and she DOES have my history and medical records...Her suggested follow-up was a pap every 6 months for 2 years... One of my MAJOR concerns is the ovarian cysts...I had NEVER had a problem with the cysts (or ANY GYN problem) until the cervical cancer creeped in...BEFORE I had the TAH, I "tried" the birth control (lets try to shrink things) method, to no avail...During the TAH, my GYN (at the time) removed whatever cysts were present, resulting in most of my right ovary being removed...

Since then, I've been in to see my "current" GYN twice...I've mentioned to her aches and pains that "I" think resemble ovarian cysts...She says she doesn't find any "physical" evidence to support that...She's run hormone tests on me (came back fine) and refuses to do a sonogram...She chalks it off to scar tissue from the TAH?!?! Not like I'm "holier-than-though" ~ but I "feel" like it's MORE than that...

The abdominal pain, as much as it comes and goes, the episodes seem to be getting increasingly worse in intensity.....I DID make another appointment with my GYN (for Tues, Aug 24th).....However?!?! I can almost anticipate her saying it's "nothing"..... (I HATE the fact that she's a "new" GYN....As much as she sees my history on paper, she doesn't REALLY know what I went through (physically OR emotionally) last year!)

I guess my question to ya'll is ~ Is there REALLY a "scar-tissue" factor after a TAH that mimics the symtoms of ovarian cysts? How common are ovarian cysts AFTER a hysterectomy?!? And what EXACTLY do they DO for ovarian cysts after a TAH?!? No offense to anyone that has success with them ~ but those ****ed birth control pills are not an option for me.... Is it like ~ deal with the pain, or go back into surgery, and prepare for menopause?

Your opinions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Ovarian Cysts?

Hi Dannilu,
I had a TAH in June 2000 for endo and also adhesions, but kept my ovaries. Less than 2 yrs after it felt like my endo was coming back I started having pain like before. Well, I am 2 wks post-op today - had my ovaries taken out and the scar tissue was awlful the Dr said. I had a cyst burst the end of May on my left ovary and another one was still on there when I went in to surgery. The surgery took longer than expected because of the scar tissue. I didn't realize that scar tissue can cause so much pain, but it does. My Dr did an internal sonogram in the office to look at things when I first went in, but he couldn't see the scar tissue only the cyst. If your not happy with your new Dr get a 2nd opinion. I wish you luck and if you want to talk you can e-mail me.
Take Care.

Ovarian Cysts?

Hi, Dannilu,
My TAH was in June of 2001. I've also had pain from time to time, but both my ovaries were removed. I agree with ellemae...by all means, get a 2nd opion if you're unhappy with your new Dr.
Best wishes,
June

Ovarian Cysts?

Thank you Ellen and June for responding! =)

Once posting my last message, I got to thinking that part of my problem may not ONLY be not having much trust in my current GYN, but also not having much faith in MY instincts....Considering that I had gotten 4 opinions the first time around ~ I had thought for SURE, in the past, that SOMEONE would agree with me and say that a TAH was NOT the solution....Likewise, considering that the conscensus was the same all around ~ it had lead me to believe that my instincts were NOT to be trusted?!?!

Point being?!? Maybe I DO need to get a bit more aggressive in what "I" might think would provide me some peace-of-mind? Whether that be demanding a sono, or finding a more compassionate DR?!

Thanx for giving me the forum in which to clarify my thoughts!!!

Ovarian Cysts?

I to had my surgury last year in August, I am not far behind you and I only have my right ovary left. I started having pain about 5 months ago and we did a emergency ultrasound and they found a cyst and we decided to wait 2 months and do another one and go from there. Well needless to say I went yesterday to the Dr. for the consultation from the Ultra sound and I am scheduled for surgury on Oct. 20th to remove the ovary and also the addhesions that I have.

I think you either should sit down and talk with your current doctor and ask for an ultrasound or get another doctor cause when I went to my doctor they immediately sent me to radiology to get an ultrasound.

Good luck!

Ovarian Cysts?

Dannilu:

Hello, dear. In your shoes, I would seek another opinion if this gyn is not more compassionate toward your complaints than she has been.

IMHO, [as a hystersister, I am not a doctor] you need a doctor that will not blow off your concerns. I would think, given your symptoms, that an transvaginal ultrasound would be in order, if nothing else, to rule out cysts. Not all cysts will be palpable in a pelvic exam.

Now, I had some pretty hefty scar tissue build up in 13 months after my TAH. It caused some of the same symptoms that you are describing. I would be glad to go into as much detail as you want. PM me.

In my case, my doctor LISTENED with compassion and helped me in the way that was best for me. He certainly did not blow off my concerns and actually he seemed to take my pain personally (it hurt him to know I still was in pain after the TAH). Since the laparoscopic removal of adhesions in January, I am living a mostly pain free life. I still have some bad days but they aren't every day.

I hope you also find a doctor who can give that kind of support to you!
