Ovarian Cysts?

Hey Ya'll !!!

I'm new to this forum, so I'm still navigating my way around the site!!! I have a question that may seem silly, yet I'd like some opinions on the matter (if ya'll don't mind?!?).... I had my hysterectomy (TAH) in July of '03.... I still have my left ovary, and a small "part" of my right ovary...

I have two children, had had my tubes tied (in 1998, after a C-Section with my daughter), and had "normal" pap results up until I was 33 y/o (2002)... I had my first abnormal pap in Oct of '02..... and had a battery of continuous tests, sono's and biopsies every other month, until I finally had the TAH ~ exactly 8 months, to the day, of my first abnormal pap... The "reasoning" behind the TAH was positive tests results for cervical cancer... It WAS contained, AND was successfully removed via several biopsies... I diligently fought the notion that a TAH was necessary ~ however, after seeking 4 different opinions from 4 different specialists, (2 men, 2 women) with them ALL making the same recommendation ~ I went with the TAH...

I moved out of state shortly after having my hysterectomy...So? I have a NEW doctor, and she DOES have my history and medical records...Her suggested follow-up was a pap every 6 months for 2 years... One of my MAJOR concerns is the ovarian cysts...I had NEVER had a problem with the cysts (or ANY GYN problem) until the cervical cancer creeped in...BEFORE I had the TAH, I "tried" the birth control (lets try to shrink things) method, to no avail...During the TAH, my GYN (at the time) removed whatever cysts were present, resulting in most of my right ovary being removed...

Since then, I've been in to see my "current" GYN twice...I've mentioned to her aches and pains that "I" think resemble ovarian cysts...She says she doesn't find any "physical" evidence to support that...She's run hormone tests on me (came back fine) and refuses to do a sonogram...She chalks it off to scar tissue from the TAH?!?! Not like I'm "holier-than-though" ~ but I "feel" like it's MORE than that...

The abdominal pain, as much as it comes and goes, the episodes seem to be getting increasingly worse in intensity.....I DID make another appointment with my GYN (for Tues, Aug 24th).....However?!?! I can almost anticipate her saying it's "nothing"..... (I HATE the fact that she's a "new" GYN....As much as she sees my history on paper, she doesn't REALLY know what I went through (physically OR emotionally) last year!)

I guess my question to ya'll is ~ Is there REALLY a "scar-tissue" factor after a TAH that mimics the symtoms of ovarian cysts? How common are ovarian cysts AFTER a hysterectomy?!? And what EXACTLY do they DO for ovarian cysts after a TAH?!? No offense to anyone that has success with them ~ but those ****ed birth control pills are not an option for me.... Is it like ~ deal with the pain, or go back into surgery, and prepare for menopause?

Your opinions would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Ovarian Cysts?

Hi Dannilu,
I'd either demand a vaginal ultrasound or go to emergency with exaggerated symptoms and have them give you one.

I can't answer the question about scar tissue mimicing cyst pain.. I am sure someone else will come along that can answer that better for you.

I am just all about..... get the sonogram if that is what you want. one way or the other.

best to you.

Ovarian Cysts?

Hi Dannilu, Scar tissue or adhesions is very common after abdominal surgery and casue a wide variety odf pain abd problems. You can find out more about adhesions in our resources section at the top of the page. However with all you have been thru it seems your Dr ahould give you an ultra sound , to rule out anything serious and just for peace of mind,. If your Dr won't do this, perhaps it's time for a new Dr?

Ovarian Cysts?

Thanx for responding... After posting my message, I got to thinking that issue may be more of my trusting "my" instincts, and feeling comfortable in taking control of the situation...Considering that I had 4 opinions the first time around, and I was SURE that SOMEONE would tell me that a TAH was NOT necessary ~ I guess I lost faith...

I didn't want to appear paranoid in demanding a sono to my DR, or even in seeking out a new DR...BUT?!?! In getting these thoughts out of my head, and getting responses from ya'll ~ I realized that I've "earned" the right to be paranoid (if that's what it would be called), and I've "earned" the right to have 2, or 3, or 4 opinions, if I so choose....

Thanx women!!! =)

Ovarian Cysts?

Hi,please get an ultrasound, if your dr. won't then get another dr. I had a VH 3 months ago. 4 weeks later had bad pain on left side. dr. immed. did an ultrasound. large cyst had already formed. alot of pain. more cysts on the other ovary. pills for 2 months to shink but no help. in 2 weeks they are going in to remove both ovaries. tubes and scar tissuse. they are taking no chances. This is your body and you know how you feel. I had VH because of pre-cancer cells. good luck to you and me both.
