Cone Biopsy

I am scheduled for a cone biopsy and cryotherapy.

Can you explain to me what is done? How long for results? I only have severe (4) precancerous cells, from pap, and colonoscopy biopsy.

Did anyone only have severe precancerous cells and then after cone find it it was actually cancer?

Thank you in advance

to Cancer Concern

I am sorry that you are going thru this. I have never had a cone but as far as the results go it can be 1 to 2 weeks, but sometimes sooner.

My cancer was found after my hyst. So I am not able to help you too much in that department.

I will for you and hope that all come out well

Thank you for the reply.

I am sorry to hear your cancer was found after your hyster. Did you have cervical or ovarian? and why did they do a hysterectomy?

I am new to all of this, and am trying to get a better handle on it. Did you have any idea you had cancer?

Cone Biopsy

I had a mass and an elevated CA-125, so we (the gyn/onc & I ) thought that I may have ovarian cancer. But ovaries were clean but not so lucky on the cervix.

So I thought that I had Ovarian cancer until I had my surgery, but it was luckly that I had the hyst when I did, althought I am a stage 2b I feel lucky.

I do thank God that he had me do the hyst when I did or they may not have caught it in time. I think HE may have had a special plan for me but I do not know if I am living up to it or not. All I can do is try.

Take care and God Bless

I had a cone biopsy and that wasn't so bad, they thought they would get all the cancer but they didn't it was inside the cervix. I am scheduled for a laproscopic radical hyst. on October 5th. Just make sure you talk with your doctors, after the cone the results were back in 4 days but then the second opinion took 2 weeks.
Take Care,
Jeanette

Cone Biopsy

I had an abnormal pap smear and had multiple abnormal ones in the past. My doc performed a biopsy in the office and the cryotherapy and sent it off the lab to be examined. I came back in a week and he told me that I had cancer in situ. he immediately set me up for a cone biopsy in 3 or 4 weeks so I could have time to heal from the biopsy. he felt that the cone would remove all the cancer cells since we had caught it early. It was done outpatient and I had no pain at all. He kept me home from work for about a week and I could not drive. I went back to the office a week later to get the results from the cone and unfortunately the cone did not remove it all, the cancer had already begun spreading up the canal and into the uterus. I now have the option to have children immediately or have a hysterectomy. i am having to have hyst because I have not been able to get pregnant and I don't want it to spread any farther. Hope this helps

Sorry that you are having problems. Generally speaking, whatever they find on a cone biopsy is usually what is found on the pathology after a hysterectomy. Sometimes there are differences in what is found on a biopsy and what is found on a cone, because the cone removes a larger sample of tissue, so it gives a better picture of the state of the cervix.

The cone is done to assess the cells on the inside of the cervix. Many docs describe it as being similar to coring an apple. The central tissue is removed and examined for abnormal cells. This can be done by laser (LEEP) or it can be done with a scalpel (cold knife cone). Healing time is slightly faster for a LEEP since the edges are cauterized by the laser or loop wire during the process.

During cryotherapy, the outside of the cervix is treated with a freezing agent for several minutes to kill off the cells on the outside surface of the cervix.

I missed 2 days of work after my cone. I felt kind of crummy and tired afterward, but once the procedure was over, there was very little discomfort.

Pathology reports can take anywhere from 4 days to 14 days. It depends on where your procedure is done and if the pathology is done onsite or if it is shipped to a lab in another location.

Good luck with your procedures! Please let us know how things turn out.
