large ovaries??????

Hi
I had my hyster/burch sling March 02..kept the ovaries as they were fine at the time..... I spend most of my time now on the ic-network.. I was dignosed with IC a year after the hyster.. I am now dealing with High blood pressure, high cholesterol, IBS ( may be from meds I took for the IC.)I am not over weight, don't drink or smoke , I get plenty of exercise and watch what I eat... Just have a family history of heart problems!!!!!!!...... I just had a vaginal check- something I had put off since the surgery.. He says my ovaries are large and is sending me for an ultra sound .. I am so worried and really hope I don't have to wait long to get that done...
What causes large ovaries??? I have been thinking that the ibs symptoms I am getting could be pressure from the ovaries.. I have never taken any hormones..
I keep thinking why didn't I get them out then, but at the time I wanted to keep them for as long as I could if they were healthy.
Would appreciate any input.... another question if they do have to come out does it have to be abdominal surgery??? I am so scared!!!
~~Pam~~
PS Hi to Dany and all the other names I remember from back then..Dany - I just got back from a visit to Que to see my mum..Takes us 15 hours! The colours of the leaves were great..

large ovaries??????

Oh ((((Pam))))) I'm so sorry you're having all of these problems. And to have to worry about the size of your ovaries, on top of everything, is just one more stress factor that you simply didn't need

While I've never been told that my ovaries were large, I'm thinking that the cause for this could be a number of things. One question: is it possible that your ovaries were always large I know that I've had questions like these, including one dealing with nodule on my left breast, and it could very well be that the nodule was always there Another reason for large ovaries could be cysts. One thing I'm thinking is that it is most likely a good sign that both ovaries are large.

I know it's easier said than done, but do try not to panic.

BTW: yes, the Fall colours are just awesome right now!!! And the leaves are just starting to turn in our area. I believe that this is my most favorite time of the year!!!!

Do take care and try not to worry too much. Sending tons of s your way.

large ovaries??????

Dany,
Thanks for the reply...I have never been told the ovaries are large before.. He said they were out of proportion to the rest of my small body...and asked if they hurt.... Ic and now the IBS give me such a sore belly that I don't think I would notice it... All I can do is patiently wait to get the ultra sound...hopely it won't take too long-- but you're right about it being both of them.. Strange!!!!!...
When I was at the Dr.s I had so many other things going on and getting sorted that when he told me that - I just did not think to ask about it...

Thanks Dany
Love, Pam

large ovaries??????

Hi.

This is my first post on "less traveled".

It is possible that you have ovarian cysts. Usually the ovaries are the size of almonds. I have a large (6.6cm) ovarian cyst. It's about the size of an egg.

I never had an indication that there was a problem until...I had a very late period with terrible pain, headache and heavy bleeding. I went to my gyn, she did an exam and sent me for a transvaginal ultrasound.

They were able to get me in right away. The test is 30 - 60 minutes and is painless.

When the test came back, the doc told me I had two problems. The first problem was the enlarged ovary (too large to do lap or vag removal) - has to be done with abdominal cut. They're not sure what's inside (it's complex) and she doesn't want it to rupture and spill the contents into my abdomen.

The type of sugery you will need depends on two things:

How large the cyst is and the type of cyst (simple or complex) and the type of sugery your doctor feels is best.

By the way....what is IC?

I have more to post - but my DH just came home and needs me.
I will edit this post or post a new one as I have more to ask you!

Best wishes.

large ovaries??????

Fl lady,
I still do not have an app. and will call the end of the week if I don't hear anything..
IC is interstitial cystitis- a chronic disease of the bladder, there is no cure but can treat the symptoms..The lining of the bladder is imflammed with pin prick hemmorages. The symptoms are pain, frequency, urgency, burning...etc... They do not know what causes it but it can be aggrevated by certain foods ( acidy, alcohol, spicy foods, caffeine) by stress, intercourse or sometimes for no known reason. I would liken it to having a constant bladder infection but IC does not respond to antibiotics..I know where all the washrooms are for two hours in all directions (lol).... ic-network.com is a place to learn more... boards just like the hyster-sisters.
I have a verticle scar incision from two c section and then the hyster - guess if the ovaries had to come out it would be that way.. I hate that thought...
I just want to know what is going on and the stress it keeping my blood pressure up..
I still find it strange that it is both ovaries....

large ovaries??????

Hi Pam.

Were you able to get an appointment yet? Will they be doing a transvaginal ultrasound? Please keep us posted.

In a way I'm facing a similar situation to yours.

I really need to get that large ovary removed. The tvu showed that my other ovary was enlarged, but when the doc put me on birth control pills the other one shrank. So... I'm thinking do I get one removed or both removed? I'm thinking the one shrank but will it get big again? Will I need another surgery down the road to have the other one removed? My doc can't predict that, so it's up to me. I would also like to keep the ovary if it's healthy since I know the hormones protect the heart. Heart disease runs on both sides of my family and I have high blood pressure.

The other problem is something the doc said I can do now or put off. I have heavy bleeding two or three days out of the month. The doc said that the uterus doesn't look so great so and she wants to remove it at the same time, since she'll be doing an ab cut. I was hoping to wait till menopause, but if things get worse and bleeding gets worse, I'd need another ab surgery! I'm leaning toward getting it removed.

Right now, my surgery has been postponed. I've been experiencing tachycardia. (irregular heart rhythm) Went for the resting stress test today, the exercise part is on Thursday. Also have a urologist appointment on Friday, getting a urodynamics test then. That whole test sounds real yucky and I'm freaking out about it. I'm thinking of having a tvt bladder repair while they're in there doing the hyst! So much to think about so many decisions!

Please post when you get your results from your test. I was interested to see your post since not many ladies seem to have ovary problems.

I've been up since 3:00 am. Have one of those banger menstrual headaches that woke me up from sleep! Excedrin didn't help....time to break out the Advil Migrane!

Best Wishes.

large ovaries??????

Hi Fllady,
I still have not heard anything about the app.. Our Medical sytem is very slow!
Heavy bleeding to the point that I only had maybe at best 10 days that I did not have to wear a pad was the main reason I had the hyster..I was just so tired of it... I am so glad I had the hyster.. That is one thing I do miss!! I had the burch sling done at the same time as the hyster- and that certainly helped the stress incontinence.. I could sneeze and not loose it... However I think it was the surgery that stirred up the IC. I am sure I had it since I was a teenager but it was aggregivated by the surgery..
I had a urodynamics testing...Yuck-- sorry but got to be honest! It was not so much that it hurt but was uncomfortable and embarassing and that uro was an idiot!!!!! They fill you up with fluid and ask you to let them know when you can't hold anymore then you just let it go and they measure the amount and somehow the pressure.. Then they do it again and then you pee in a toilet that catches it in a bucket...I could only hold about 1/2 a cup and I think the average person can hold about 2-4 cups...
When I had the hyster- I had thrush in my mouth and a very stufforn Urinary track infection (UTI) It took ages to get that sorted..A year after the hyster I had a cystoscope/ hydrodistension where they fill you up and expand you and have a good look at the lining of the bladder and that is how I was dignosed with IC.. You are put out for that - thank good ness... It often helps people with IC but I was in the percentage that it made me worse.... Grrrrrrr! I have got the IC pretty well under control now.. Still have painful days but it goes away the next day...
Ovaries.... Like I said I wanted to hold onto mine for as long as I could and they were healthy at the time of the surgery so left them alone.....I just want to find out what is going on--
I try to not think about it...but hard not too.
I am rather a high strung emotional person =Dr suggested Yoga for the high blood pressure and I just laughed and said "that is too slow for me" he said "well isn't that the point?" I do resist a ball exercise and walk a lot.
With this med I take for the BP - I have noticed some palpatrations that scare me but it does not happen often..I get blood test and back to Dr in 3 months...
Hope you get things sorted out ---- I waffled about the hyster but I am so glad I had it done....... just not sure about the darn old ovaries.... (lol)

large ovaries??????

Hi - got an app. for Oct 27th... She told me to drink 32 ounces of water an hour and a half before the test and to hold it... I have IC and told them that is darn near impossible for me to do.. She told me to do the best I could (lol) I don't think she even knew what IC was...I will be doing the "pee pee dance"!!!!!!
One good thing--- atleast I am not going to have to wait too long!!!
love Pam
