After Effects of High Dose Radiation

Hi all,

I am going in a couple weeks for 2 high dose radiation treatments. I just finished my daily, 25 treatments this week. I had my hysterectomy 2 1/2 months ago and they found endometrial cancer from the pathology report.

My question is, can I go back to work right after my high dose treatment (they said it will be 1/2 hr of radiation) or any of you had it and take the rest of the day off? I am a hairstylist. The girl that gave me the daily treatments said I should take the day off. My doctor said it won't hurt and I can go directly to work. Anyone been through this?

Thank you,
Beth

After Effects of High Dose Radiation

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question, but I would have to say that it is better to be prepared and plan on taking the day off. Even a 1/2 hour of treatment is bound to make you tired, or atleast I would think. Whatever you decide, I hope that everything goes well and you are feeling fine afterwards.

high dose radiation

beth
i had 3 doses of hdr. the first treatment takes a little longer to set you up. they insert a catheter (sp?) and have to insert the radiation tube into the vagina. the first one was a little trumatic for me because they had a hard time inserting the cath. they had to give me a shot of darvon. and that is the only reason i had to take the rest of the day off. other than that, the other treatments went smoothly and i was able to go straight to work

After Effects of High Dose Radiation

Beth: I ended up not having this kind of radiation, but if you're talking about the vaginal insert, they had told me that they would give me both a painkiller and something to relax me, which would mean that I would feel pretty "out of it", and would need someone to drive me. I guess those drugs aren't absolutely essential, but are used to make the procedure more bearable. It sounds like it would be best to plan on taking the day off if at all possible.

After Effects of High Dose Radiation

Beth - I had three vaginal brachytherapies following 25 external pelvic radiations. I scheduled my brachytherapies for 3 PM - I'm a high school guidance counselor and could leave school right behind the busses and go for my treatment. Maybe you could schedule a few appointments in the morning and then go for your treatment. The internal treatments didn't hurt, but they were sorta awkward, with the catheter and all. I was always more fatigued after the internal treatments, usually by the following afternoon or so. If you can plan your work so you have a couple of light days after treatments, that might be a good idea too.
Hang in there!

A cath????

Auggghhhh! I'm having my first Brachytherapy on Wed 01/10/01. Noone had mentioned a cath to me at all except on this website. Auggghh! So help me if they come at me with that....!!! I'll of course just let them do it. BUT next time I see my oncologist I'm going to give her an earfull. She has been a fantastic doctor this whole time so it will be kind of fun to have something to yell at her about and she'll take it well.

thank goodness for the info on this website.

Beth - I'm done in from my External rad treatments. My hat is off to anyone who was able to work during this time. take care.
