Trouble with speech ?

I'm not sure if this is hormone related, surgery related or completely unrelated!!!!-but I've been having some problems with my speech for the past few weeks. I'm 47,six months post op,on the Vivelle dot .075 and otherwise pretty healthy. I was on BP meds for the 2 months before surgery but my pressure went down right afterwards and hasn't been high since. I've had my words come out totally wrong over the past few weeks on several occasions. Its not like a brain-fog or that I don't know what to say. I start to say a sentence and a word comes out jumbled -not slurred -but with different letters in it. I can't relate the occurrances to anything,it just seems to be happening more often. I hear the word come out of my mouth and can't believe it. I spoke with my internist today and he suggested and MRI of the brain. I have an appointment for next Tues but I'm really concerned. Thought maybe I should stop the estrogen? If anyone has any ideas or has heard of anything like this PLEASE let me know. You have all been so helpful with all my questions.I'm worried that this is a sign of a tumor or blood clot .I don't want to alarm my family-so this is my only place to vent until I have the test on Tues. Thanks sisters-anne

Trouble with speech ?

Hi, there B-n-B, at least you won't feel alone, I haven't been able to put my finger on this one either. I swear, sometimes I'll say something then go "what was that?" like you said like my mind is adding things together or something, I do it everyday quiet often too. I feel pretty goofy at times and wonder what people must think at times, (like are they saying,"what she say" to someone else, wondering if I'm messed up, drinking or something" I have gone to hang up with someone on the phone and my goodbye, be all messed up, and hang up wondering to myself "what did I just say?" I am not surprized anymore, what I am finding screwey with myself since I've had this surgery, and trying to get balance. I had my surgery 6/7/04 am currently on Estradiol and Estratest, and OCT prog. cream. Will clue you in if I learn anything, Please do the same for me. Take Care...KIM

Trouble with speech ?

Think you should continue to check this out with your Dr as soon as you can.

It is probably NOT this, but slurred speech can be a sign of a stroke, and if you are on HRT, this can be a complication. I have exploring this at the moment, and usually this will occur in the first 12 months (if it is going to occur at all, that is!)

A good Oz site for this is

Just to be safe!

Trouble with speech ?

Hi Aussieone, I here ya what your saying about the stroke thing and slurred speech, Speaking only for myself, its not a slurrying thing going on with me. more like words I am thinking don't come out like they should. like tranversing the letters, doing that and just plain changing the word to something unknown. missing letters or adding them. I was wondering this, about myself, you know how your mind can race? Well I have always been a hyper, high matabolism type talked a hundred miles a min. people would say slow down. Well my mind races the same only I can't seperate the thoughts. If I'm trying to do something and 50 million other thoughts are running through my head (this is normal for me) you can't come up and ask me something, Even if I know the answer it's like I have a hard time connecting it to my speech. I think maybe the route, the answer (words) are supposed to be takeing to come out my mouth gets tangled up with other thoughts, something subconciously getting in the way. the say way your dreams jump from thing to thing, does this make any sense. just a thought strickly from knowing me...KIM

Trouble with speech ?

Glad to know someone understands what I'm talking about. It's definitely not slurred speech-its extra or jumbled letters in the word. I've had some headaches but not really a significant number or worse than usual. I did have an episode of dizziness on Monday which was what prompted me to take this a step furthur. Plus a co-worker heard me scramble a word on a phone call-we both laughed it off but inside I was panicing because I couldn't believe what just came out of my mouth. I took my patch off tonight and took an asprin-will call gyn tomorrow maybe he knows more about this than my regular dr. Web MD site lists speech changes as a possible adverse side effect to estrogen but doesn't specify. If I can get the insurance authorization through maybe I can get the MRI before Tues. Its going to be a nerve racking wait- will keep you all posted and thanks so much for the support- an insomnia night for sure

HI borednbaffled

I first wanted to say that I think following up with your doctor for an MRI is best. Whenever we are in doubt it is always better to be safe.

That being said, I have experienced the exact same thing. For me I think it is caused from a lack of estrogen not actually from the estrogen replacement I use. When my levels were way down after my surgery, that is when I noticed it the most.

There have been periods of time (even recently) that when my levels feel low, it returns. Especially the typing thing. The word have comes out hvae and I feel like dyslexia has set in. It seems like when my estrogen levels are normal, Then I don't have this problem.

Here is an article about estrogen and brain fog. Even though this isn't what some might consider brain fog. I feel there are some relevant issues to memory retreival and other areas of the brain that are affected from lack of estrogen. Brain fog

Let us know what your doctor says.

Trouble with speech ?

Dear Troubled Tabby,

Great article! Thanks!

I am having verbal and typing problems too. I can't seem to spell the simplest words when typing. Also trouble with names and short term memory.

I'm on Estradiol. It seems better since I started the patch.

Anne -

Good luck with the MRI let us know what happens!

Trouble with speech ?

Hi troubled tabby- thank you so much for the article. It has given me hope that there may be another reason for this that's not as bad as the alternatives. Ironically, I was thinking I needed MORE estrogen and had even posted a question about that. I spoke with my gyn's nurse today- she said to take the patch off (which I had already done) and to come in for an appointment tomorrow. With no luck getting insurance authorization yet for the mri I hope I'll feel better after talking to the dr. tomorrow.

I do transpose letters typing as well but I think I've always done that - just a matter of my fingers being slower than my brain.

I will let you all know what the dr has to say tomorrow- thanks again
