Blood Transfusion ??s among a few others

Hello Ladies!

I'm still very new to this site but the info on here has been amazing! I have a couple questions regarding low blood. I'm extremely anemic because of the gallons of blood loss over the past three years due to my out of control uterus bleeding (my surgery is scheduled for 11/8 yeah!). I've had two blood transfusions in the past year and there's a possibility that I may need a third one during surgery depending on how much blood loss there is. Anyone else go through a similar situation?

Another question, after surgery I'm going to be taking blood thinning medication for approx. 6 weeks (Lovenox shots). Now, I've been on coumadin before and that was pill form, but being informed that I'm going to have to give myself a shot in the stomach twice a day has me terrified! I do not like needles but I deal with them because I have to, but to have to administer the shots myself? Oh boy. I will have no one at home with me during my recovery time for the first two weeks to administer the shots (I'm in IL, my family is in CA).

My last question, I plan to fly to CA after my first follow-up appt. to finish my recovery near my family, any helpful tips for flying so soon after surgery? I asked my dr. would this be ok and she informed me it would. Sorry for the lengthy post! Thanks!

Blood Transfusion ??s among a few others

Hi, I just thought I would post my 2 cents. I have not had hyst yet but I had some serious abdominal surgery, and I had an extremely LOW blood count, from internal bleeding. Before the surgery i had an Iron transfusion and a shot or 2 of EPO. Erythropoetin (probably spelled wrong) It stimulates blood production and the iron is there to help create new red blood cells FAST (BUT it is very expensive, that is probably why they dont routinely use it, blood is cheaper). I personally will not accept a blood transfusion, so this was something I vigorously pursued. When I came out of surgery my blood count was actually HIGHER then when I went in. I know a few other people who have had this type of treatment/prep for surgery.

Anyhow I just thought I would let you know about that. Not sure if you could do that with all of the other things you were taking, because of course I know nothing about medicine except what has happened to me! Just an FYI for you.

Take care

Hi MSMACK,

I'm new to this forum too and I posted a question on anemia and then I saw your post! I haven't been where you are but my doctor informs me I'm well on my way to a blood transfusion if my bleeding doesn't get under control soon, so hearing you've already had to have two blood transfusions and possibly face another one makes me feel so bad for you. I'm glad you're getting your surgery soon! You even said (yeah), which makes me think you're glad about it too?? I went from not wanting a hysterectomy at all costs, to considering it and agonizing over it because I have no children, to "get this demon uterus out of me!!" no matter what!! Anyway, your email touched a cord because of your severe anemia and I wanted to tell you. I'm not qualified to answer any of your other questions but I'm thinking of you. Erin

Blood Transfusion ??s among a few others

Erin,

Thanks so much for the well wishes. Yes, I'm finally happy about the upcoming surgery only because my way of life has not been 'normal' for almost 3 years. Imagine bleeding for 30 days NONSTOP? The longest I've gone has been 45 days. A 'normal' period for me is averaging about 15 days. That's half the month. I'm constantly tired, irritable, and just plain 'blah'. All of this and still working a regular job and taking care of my 14 y/o son. Everyone keeps telling me how wonderful I'll feel afterwards and I'm ecstatically looking forward to it. It was a tough decision because even though I do have 1 child, the reality that I won't be able to have any more children took a while to get used to and come to grips with. If you have any questions about anemia, I'm the Anemia Queen! lol. Take Care

Good luck with your surgery. I can't imagine bleeding for that long straight. I have been taking two prescription strength iron pills daily for a while now, and was put on Lupron to stop the bleeding. My hemoglobin is finally high enough to donate my own blood for my surgery.
As far as the Lovenox goes....the needle is very thin and tiny, sort of like an insulin needle. You can give your shots on the side of your thigh where there is plenty of subcutaneous tissue. ( the other obvious place would have been your abdomen, but that is not going to be a good idea after abdominal surgery).
Take care,

Blood Transfusion ??s among a few others

I have had severe anemia for at least 5 months now. Last check, the hemoglobin was down to 73. I've been taking 2 iron pills, but still more is going out than coming in!

I'm having a tah on November 25th, couldn't stand it anymore. I was bleeding almost non-stop for 6 months. I'm going on November 9th for an IV iron transfusion to bring my blood level up first. My doctor wants to avoid a blood transfusion, and all the risks associated with it. I live in Canada, and the cost of treatment is usually not as much of a factor as what is best.

I wish you well!!

I had four blood transfusions thanks to anemia and fibroids! The doctor had two units in the OR for me in case I needed them which happily I did not. My husband and son donated blood for my surgery. I did take Slow FE and had to wait three months until my hemoglobin came up for surgery. It is amazing with the anemia under control how much better I feel.

regarding the blood transfusion question. I did have to have some over the course of some of my surgeries. But after the first two, my doctor started requesting a cell saver be on hand in the OR. This collected any blood I lost and recycled it back into me..

Hey Dawn, I see you are having the iron transfusion. Are you going to have the epo shot? It is absolutely amazing.

Canadian here also.
