anyone still needing pain meds at all at six weeks???

Hi girls,
I am six weeks postop tomorrow, and I'm still needing pain medication at night. I need two Norco 5/325; one at 8 p.m. and one at about 2-3 a.m. My pain is really bad by 8 p.m. and I'm pretty swollen in my incisional area. The pain is deep and like a sharp cramp. It hurts to extend my legs fully. This isn't a new pain, but I really thought I would be off all pain meds at this point. I am still taking Advil throughout the day, and that seems to work, but I have been back to my regular schedule for over a month now due to lack of help, and by the time the kids go to bed, I am in serious pain, I think just from the accumulation of the day's activities. Stopping my activities just isn't an option with two small kids.

I have to call my doctor today, as I only have one day's worth of medication left. I have to fight for pain relief with my doctor, and I understand his paranoia, but I'm wondering if I'm just around the corner or whether it is worth fighting for for another week or two of pain meds. The pain is still such that I cannot sleep no matter how tired I am if I don't take the medication for the pain.

Are any of you still needing prescription pain meds at any time during your day? Am I a freak??? I feel like I'm progressing, but just slower than I had hoped. I am taking significantly less than I was, as far as frequency and dosage, but I had hoped to be completely off by now. Any words of wisdom?

anyone still needing pain meds at all at six weeks???

Hi Happy,
sorry I did not read this post earlier. I personally think you need to go find out why you have that much pain and why your incision is swollen. At 6 weeks, my incision was not swollen but I still had swelly. I would be concerned there is somethign going on inside there. Did you have a 6 wk chk and did he check out your incision. My doctor had to prod mine all over and boy did it hurt that night. But there was nothing going on underneath it, no infeciton or swelling.

I am sending you huge hugs sweety. Let us know what happens, K??

anyone still needing pain meds at all at six weeks???

Hi Harley Kat!
Thanks for the reply. I feel pretty alone in this. I feel like I should be so much stronger than this. My tummy is swollen, not really my incision, just general swelly belly that is gone by morning. My doctor doesn't do six week checks. He does a two- four- and eight-week check for some reason. Most people do a two and six week I think. Anyway, I'm still in enough pain to ask about it, but I feel like I shouldn't be needing it now, and my doctor would be one to agree. I keep hoping that I will turn some magical corner where I will be out of pain and not needing these pesky medications anymore. They are the only things that work, and they are impossible to get. I even looked into buying them on-line from one of those places with a doctor on staff so that I would have enough just to get me through the next week or two...I should hope I would be out of pain by then....but they are very very expensive. And something about it just feels wrong.

Are you still in pain at all? Is anyone still needing these meds?

anyone still needing pain meds at all at six weeks???

Hey, Girl.
No one person's pain is llike anyone else's. That being said, there are a few things you really need to do.
1) Make an appointment today with that doc! I had TAH 6 days ago, and if I were in that much pain I would. 6 weeks seems a bit much, to say the least.
2) I used to work in the hospital and a few doc's offices. You get to know the patients. When people have pain, it's real, but certain drugs, you see the same story over and over. Yours is one of them. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you should be concerned. I was prescribed a med in the same family as yours, and took it my 1st 3 nights at home, as bed time seems to be my problem(getting in the darn bed!) I will not take it tonight, because I am afraid of it, frankly. 3 motrin every 4-6 actually helps enough that I can get by.But that's me.Your doc needs to manage your pain effectively.

A big side effect of your med is...constipation.How's it "going"? That'll give ya a good swelly belly, and, for me personally, I think my worst pains have been from gas & constipation.

Here's a link to more info on your med-
Get informed, and bug that doctor, girl! REmember, people are getting paid plenty to take care of you!Good Luck.Kath

anyone still needing pain meds at all at six weeks???

Dear Happygo,
I am 8 weeks yesterday. I have needed the pain meds. At 6 weeks I was still using them some of the time depending on what I needed to do. I just got home for a 4 day trip with lots of shopping and taking my grandson to the Denver Zoo and I couldn't have gotten through it without some pain meds.
I am convinced mine has all been connected to doing too much and am guessing the same is true of you too.
I just replied to your other post and want to encourage you to add this topic to your discussion with dh. You really need some help.
I agree you should call your dr too and get this checked right away. I am sure when you call asking for more meds they will want to see you.
Some of us heal slower than others. It is just the way it is. I hope your dr is understanding and you can get the answers you need. I will add that my pain has gotten much less in the past 2 weeks. Let us know what the dr says.

Blessings, Rita
