Ovarian cyst and hysterectomy

I am 43 years old and recently had a transvaginal ultrasound due to some breakthrough bleeding and a family history of ovarian cancer, my mom died at age 59 of ovarian cancer and a maternal aunt also died of ovarian cancer. The ultrasound showed a small cyst on my right ovary, needless to say I am somewhat scared due to my family history, but my GYN suggested we "wait a few months and see what happens". I am wanting to just go ahead and get my ovaries removed as I am afraid of eventually contracting ovarian cancer. Do you feel a wait and see attitude with my family history is warranted? Just curious for anyone's opinion. Thanks!!!

I would get a second opinion.

Even if it is nothing but a cyst, the stress of not knowing would simply be unbearable.

Did your doctor also run a CA125 test on your blood? Also, you might want to be tested for the two genetic markers for ovarian cancer to ease your mind. An oophorectomy is a drastic operation and you should go into it with both eyes wide open. Definitely get another consultation from a gynecological oncologist.

Let us know what happens.

Take care.

HI Tammy

I know this must be a hard decision for you with your family history

I agree that you should always get a second and third opinion if neccessary. Each doctor has a different outlook and might have a different opinion or treatment option.

Here is some srticles to read on ovarian cancer. Maybe it will help you with weighing the pro and cons to having the surgery.

Juniper and Troubled Tabby,

Thanks for replying, I appreciate the input, I think a 2nd opinion is warranted. I did have the CA125 test done and it was 7 which is very low which is good, and I don't believe truly in my heart that the cyst is cancer, but the wondering and worrying is truly unbearable, you are totally right about that. I just saw how horribly my Mom suffered before dying from ovarian cancer....I just feel that removal of my ovaries is the right decision for me. Now if I can just get my gyn to do it and if not, a second opinion. Thanks again!!!!

Ovarian cyst and hysterectomy

Tammy, Get a second and third opinion. I didn't and regret it. I had a TABH with removal of both ovaries for what looked like and was a benign cyst. My CA 125 was also ok. I felt great before my surgery and feel like a train wreck afterwards. I am 52 yrs old postmenopausal, and felt great before surgery. Not so afterwards. I can't imagine doing this prior to menopause without having a firm diagnosis of CA.

The thinking on the value of ovaries after menopause is shifting. I wish I had understood this better prior to my surgery. I was not on HRT prior to my surgery but am on HRT now. Even postmenopausal ovaries perk out small amts of hormones that are thought to be health protective throghout your life. Even if you choose HRT you still have a small amt of background hormones from your ovaries.

No surgery is without risks. One of my ureters was sutured, requiring a second surgery. I may still even need a third. Even the best surgeons sometimes have bad outcomes.

With hindsight, I would either continue to follow my 3cm benign appearing cyst via ultrasound or just have the cyst removed. If you are at a higher risk for ovarian ca you might ask about routine ultrasound screening.
