ovarian cysts

hello there everyone..
well i am having a few concerns ..and a couple of questions..
questions first.. will an ultrasound show cancer of the ovary..
and do non maligant cysts on the ovary cause symptoms

i have had irregular periods for a few years.. i have some systemic issues that are unresolved.. looks like lupus acts like lupus but not showing in the blood really.. so this summer i had a period in july... and never got it again until just last week..
i was seeing a immunologist and he just said oh it is early menopause.. so i belived him.. didn't want to bother the gp..
Until (having been single for a couple of years ) i found out that intercourse was very painful so i went to the gp...
she ran the blood work for menopause and pocked at my tummy and sent me off for an ultrasound. the blood work was fine..
the ultrasound showed two cysts. one that is simple and 2 cm on one ovary and on the other ovary a complex 4.5 by 4 by some other number... cyst with septations.. she is very concerned about this i am going back for a second ultrasound...and then off to see a specailist.
i am 41 and no real history of problems gyno wise.. i had my appendix out last year and exploratory and they told me everything looked great ..
Hope fast do cyst grow...should i be worried.. cancer runs in my dads family .. no one had ovarian i don't think..
are there questions i should ask my gp at the follow about the kind of doctor she is sending me to.. any one have any thought s here.. not sure if i am worrying for nothing..

my second concern is. i have been reading that ovarain cancer has no symptoms until it is advanced. i have had symptoms of a band around my waist for a few months. aleast i am getting indigestion if i eat anything heavy ... i am getting lower adbominal aching and pain and discomfort into my groin.. my lower back has started to ache.. i never had problems with that before too... i look three to four months pregant.. can cyst alone cause these symptoms.. like i said any thoughts would be great thanks

(((Kelly))) Welcome to Cancer Concerns!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having some problems, but it sounds like your doc is keeping things moving. While ovarian cysts are generally benign, when one looks suspicious it needs to be acted upon. I hope your doc is sending you to see a gynecologic/oncologist. They are the experts in this area, and if ever there is a concern that there is a possibility of cancer, well, those are the docs to do the job!! Please request to see one.

Frequently ovarian cancer is detected in its more advanced stages, but it can be found in the earlier stages as well. Some women have commented that after they were diagnosed, they were able to look back and realize that they had had symptoms earlier and just didn't realize it. But benign cysts can also cause some of these symptoms on occasion.

Try not to panic. Follow-up with your doctor and get in to see a gyn/onc as soon as possible. Keep us posted!

Keeping you in my thoughts and 'ers.

s Kelly

Unfortunately it takes surgery and a biopsy to make the diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
Since your ultrasound showed one complex cyst with septations it is very important that the specialist you see is a gyn oncologist.
They are the experts whenever ovarian cancer is a possibility
You should also request a ca 125 blood test. Not a perfect diagnostic tool, but a possible indicator for cancer.
Unfortunately you are correct about most ovarian cancers being diagnosed at late stages. Over 70% of all cases are already stage III and IV. Right now there is no early warning test like a PAP smear or mammogram for ovarian cancer.
But hopefully your diagnosis will not be cancer.
Best wishes. Stop back and update us.
