Depressed over losing uterus

Help. I hope others have experienced this. After 2 live births and many years of horrible periods (pain, mood swings, heavy bleeding) and 2 years of begging my gp, I am finally having my much wanted, much needed hysterectomy on Jan 19, 05. I am wondering if I have made the right decision. All my life I was lead to believe that my uterus was what defined me as a woman. I have 2 beautiful kids and know I didn't want any more children since my pregnancy were awful and I tied my tubes after my 2 son. But, I feel I am greiving but not sure. I have asked several of my women friends whom have had their hysterectomy and said they didn't experience anything like that. Am I normal, am I going to get over this feeling of loss? Help. Thank you all.
Gail

Depressed over losing uterus

Hi Gail!

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing the emotions you describe. But, let me assure you, you are absolutely normal! Grieving the loss of our uterus is very common. My doctor even told me that it is frequently experienced by hysterectomy patients, and medical science doesn't even know exactly "why" for certain.

If you are like most, I think you will discover that you will eventually be able to put the hysterectomy experience behind you, and move forward with enjoying your life. And with any difficulties you may experience, remember that you have all of us here to help you in your journey.

Many s and Best Wishes to You!

Depressed over losing uterus

Hi Gail,
One of my all time favorite threads is one written by a lady and fellow hostess , a couple of years ago. I think you would enjoy reading it ~

One of my favorite replies is the one by Cecee. She speaks of , "what I've known and what might still have been..... a connection to our womanhood". I refer to it often because it is so true for many of us.

You're not alone

Depressed over losing uterus

Hi, just wanted to send some support to you. I still struggle with accepting the new me, and the issues around having the surgery. I guess because I could only deal with so much at a time. There was a lot going on in my life around the time of my hyst. Sending many:hug's:

Depressed over losing uterus

Hi:
I hear ya. I have three beautiful children two girls and a boy ages 23,20 & 17. I had my tubes tied 17 years ago after the birth of my son (the baby) .
I am having a hysterectomy soon (date not booked yet) for heavy bleeding due to hormonal changes.
I never want any more children but I think maybe it makes you seem like less of a woman? Maybe we shall all go out and buy a Shania Twain CD and all listen to the song "Man, I feel like a woman" LOL
Anyway, I am sure the feeling will pass when you can pass out all your boxes of tampons off to your friends! LOL
PS my biggest fear is I will wake up with a mustache. LOL

(((gail)))

You are definately not alone in your grief. I too also had a hard time dealing with the loss. I didn't know how to explain it to others so they just thought I was losing it. The only people that understood were right here on this site.
I don't know what i would have done wihtout my sisters help through it all. It is completely natural for you to feel this way.
Like me, once the hyst was over and the symptoms I had left, it made it much better to cope.
I hope you find that your surgery will make you feel better physically and spiritually.
If you ever need to talk, you can email me or PM me..anytime!
