can't swallow pills

My date is Dec 1 and the doctor tells me she wants me to have a spinal. I'm assuming they will wean from that over to pain pills. My problem is that I can't swallow anything larger than a Motrin size pill. As I recall, most pain pills are LARGE!

My question: has anyone had tiny pain pills ?? If not, I'd have to crush the big pill and what... put it into applesauce? My GP said to be careful crushing pills and adding them to food because it can change the chemical balance.

I sure hope my doctor can remember the size of pills before she orders me something. Any suggestions on how to get them down? My throat actually freezes up and I panic...

I was on a pain pump the day of surgery, but after that I took motrin (ibuprofen) only. My doctor prescribed the large 600 mg pills, but I bet you could just take three of the small ones to similar effect.

While in the hospital they can also offer you something like toradol which is by injection.

I didn't find the pain unmanageable - lower doses of motrin did me just fine and I never took anything harder though they sent me home with vicodin.

Definitely talk to the doctor and the anesthesiologist about developing a pain management system that you can take easily. (I think motrin comes in a liquid for kids).

Oh I'll take an injection anytime! It would be wonderful also if I could go straight to motrin like you did. I just never imagined that would be possible. I will really talk to the doctors about it.
Thanks for your input. Sounds like you're doing well.

can't swallow pills

I'm 36 and still can't take pills so I completely understand...

What I can do is take pills with a swallow of food, like a cracker. I'm on Vicodin and Motrin, and neither is a 'horse pill' so I haven't had any problems, but I do need to take them with a bite of something. I had morphine my first 1 1/2 days then switched to the pills.

Good luck!

can't swallow pills

I get really gaggy on pills too unless they are very very tiny.

what I usually do is take a mouthful of water, tip my head back and drop the pill into the water and then swallow.

On the other hand, I hope that you end up with pain levels like mine, because they were really very moderate and I didn't NEED pain meds after the IV was removed. --- I don't think I'm really pain tolerant, but 99% of the time I felt aches rather than real pain and a few tylenol extra strength did the trick.

best wishes

I know they make some pain meds in liquid such as tylenol 3 with codiene. So, maybe that will be an option for you. I would as some of the other ladies suggested, talk to your doctor before hand about pain management.

Ok ladies....this is very encouraging. I'll take this off my concern list. You've put my mind a ease. Thanks for your help again!

Hi Maralyn,

I didn't realize that you had finally been scheduled for surgery! You've been a lady-in-waiting ever since I've been here (and that's been a long time!!!)

I hope everything goes well for you on December 1, as you finally go for your Crown. You should get an extra jewel, just for having to wait so long.

As the other ladies have said, talk with your doctor about your concerns with swallowing pills. I'm sure there's something that can be worked out.

Best wishes and big s,

Hi Lisa! I sure remember you...let's see, something about large fibroids and a bowl of fruit! I think I was even here before you! I remember you were also having difficulties with your mother's health. Hopefully you and everyone in your family are doing well.

Thank you for the good wishes. I lived over at OPTIONS for a long time. I'm looking forward to surgery. Thanks for your thoughts!
