Pre-Op Suggestions from Post Op women

Hi ladies,
I am scheduled for a TAH/LSO on Dec. 2nd. I have a large 13 cm Dermoid Cyst, an 8 cm "mass" inside it, and possible Endometriosis. Any suggestions about what to do or not to do next week and especially the night before? How did you battle the dry mouth from not being able to drink anything the night before th surgery? Is water ok? Thanks!

I am pre-op also, but a veteran of many surgeries. No, water is not ok. Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery. You are usually allowed to brush your teeth and rinse your mouth, but NO water or mints of anything like that after midnight! The pre-op nurse suggested to me today to drink twice the amount of liquids that I would usually drink the last two days before my surgery in order to stay hydrated. I have noticed some other posts suggesting Gatorade before and after surgery.
Best of wishes,

It is very important to drink a lot of water at least the day before surgery because it will be a while before you even get IV fluids, plus it makes it easier for them to find a vein to start your IV. What I did to battle the dry mouth before surgery, was swish my mouth with water and spit it out. You can not have water, gum, hard candy or anything after midnight, but your admissions nurse will tell you this when they set up and go over your surgery some more.
The only prep I had was a betadine douche and fleets enema the night before.
As far as what not to do the week before surgery, there are no restrictions there.
Good luck to you and please, do not hesitate to ask any questions if you have any, and let us know when you get home and we will be praying everything goes okay

I tried to get some extra rest the week prior to surgery so my body and immune system were better prepared for a major surgey and recovery.

Nope, no water before surgery. I tried to read and watch movies the night before suregry too keep my mind off worry, hunger, thirst, and the bowel prep I had to do.

Good luck with your surgery.

Be sure to visit us in the Post-op Forum after surgery to let us know how you are doing.

Pre-Op Suggestions from Post Op women

I go in on Monday for pre-op blood work. I had the X-rays and EKG already. So I guess my regular medical doctor who is doing the pre=op stuff will tell me more then. He's good and I trust him. No one has said anything about bowel prep. I'll call my Obgyn on Monday too to see what else I need to do. I'm suppose to show up at 5:45AM the morning of...Ick. Thanks for the idea about more water and Gatorade. And ok. Got it. No water after midnight. Happy Turkey Day!

i was worried too about thirst. it was fine. i was too nervous to eat or drink anyway. i drank a lot! before midnight, just lots and lots of water. i was allowed to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth. that helped with the dry mouth, just don't swallow. it goes by very fast.

They're serious about NO water etc the night before.
I drank tons of extra water, juice etc during the weeks leading up so that at least going in was as well-hydrated as possible.
My surg time was 12:45 Mon, & tho I had no interest in food (nerves), was incredibly thirsty all morning, but kept as busy as poss - there's just not much you can do about it.
When I was in recovery they did allow me to have ice chips - they start you slow to make sure you won't be nauseaus - I was lucky w/that, but felt like I would need an entire iceberg !

I do think that by staying well-hydrated before it made the thirsty period more manageable.

WHat I found helpful was to have a couple water bottles packed in my bag - the nurses were very busy & by having my own there it was a relief not to have to wait.
My DH &DD were able to make sure there was always water within reach when they left.

Good luck to you!
