Legs and ankles swollen - what to do?

Thanks everyone for reassuring me. The swelling seems to be less today. I tried calling my DR and their office is closed.

I guess surgery right before a holiday is not a great idea!

I see my DR Monday for staple removal, so I'll just take it easy till then and drink more fruit juices. Surgery and anesthesia does weird things to the body!!!!

Have a good weekend everyone,
Joyce

Legs and ankles swollen - what to do?

Hi Joyce (MikeyFan):

I have been doing some research on the web abuot blood clots in the legs, which can develop due to surgery. You may want to call your Doc. & let them know about the leg swelling, as you may have developed a blood clot which can be very dangerous if not treated.

I myself have been having shooting pains down my right leg... feels like it's in the main vein deep in my leg. I'm goin to mention it to my Doc. at during my follow-up. appt this week.

If it's not one thing, its another... huhh?? But this too shall pass & hopefully sooner rather than later!

Hang in There & make sure you call the doc. about your leg/ankle swelling!

Vickie,

What did your doctor say about the pains? I have the same thing in my right leg. Plus the last couple of days both my legs thighs to ankles are swelling and tingling. I am 8 weeks postop.

Thanks,
Joanne Fletcher

Legs and ankles swollen - what to do?

A blood clot will typically affect only one leg....it will be more swollen than the other, and may be warmer to touch, as well.

The way you describe your swelling in both legs sounds like fluid. These ladies had lots of super suggestions to prevent and reduce the water retention. While you're swelling, be careful not to wear any socks or sweatpants that could cause band-like pressure on any part of your legs. Also, lemon slices in your drinking water, as well as drinking tea and eating watermelon can help diurese you, too.

Your doc will always want to hear any problems you may be having. On any day that you see swelling, do an experiment: Take your thumb and firmly press on the swollen area, then remove it. If your thumb left a "dent", count how many seconds it takes to go back to normal. If it takes 2 seconds, or more, your doc must know ASAP.....even if it means calling his after hours answering service.

Hopefully, this shall all pass soon. Let us know how things are tomorrow, too. Take care....

Legs and ankles swollen - what to do?

Thought I'd follow up since this thread has been revived and I started it......

The swelling in my legs lasted about 2 days and during that time I kept my legs elevated as much as possible and drank lots of cranberry or cran-apple juice. After that it went away - maybe my kidneys were still waking up.

I'm 8 weeks post-op now and feeling great. I haven't had any complications other than a slightly sluggish intestinal system. Drinking "Super Dieter's Tea" helps that.

The swelling was very scary to me at the time!!
