Can someone tell me what a LAPAROTOMY is like?

I am scheduled for a laparoscopy next Thursday. Dr. says there is a 50/50 chance that he may end up converting to a laparotomy depending on what he finds (suspected adhesions or returning endo). I've never had a large incision (hyst was lavh) so I don't really know what to expect or prepare for.

Thanks for any thoughts....

Can someone tell me what a LAPAROTOMY is like?

I had a laprotomy a few years before I had the hyst. Basically the doctor made a large incision across my stomach. At the time, he used staples to close me up. The staples were removed at around 2 or 3 weeks post op. I was off work for 4 weeks and was instructed to only go back part time for a few weeks after that. I was to gradually resume my normal activities after the 4 weeks. There was to be no lifting, straining, exercise, etc for at least 4 weeks.

I had an abdominal hysterectomy also. The doctor used the same incision that was used at the time of the laprotomy. This time the doctor used internal stitches that dissolved over time.

Your recoop time will probably depend on what the doctor sees and does once you are in the OR. I would plan on at least 4 weeks off, if not more. I have found that with each additional surgery I've had, it takes me longer to recover. You only have one time to heal right so I have learned the hard way not to rush myself.

You really should call the doctor and tell him that you have some questions about the laprotomy, should he have to proceed that way.

Good luck on your upcoming surgery. You'll be in my ers.

Shelli, it goes. The incision is usually a bikini incision about a few inches above you pubic area and is about 6-8 inches long but that all depends onthe doc. Some sisters have had a hip to hip incision. The recovery is in the hospital for 3 days if everything goes well. You will hopefully wake up with a morphine pump where it continuously gives you morhpine andyou have a button to push if you need more, but theywill explain that to you as well.
Honey, it hurts...there isno easy way to explain that. The recovery at home is an average 6 weeks. You will be closed with staples.
At home you need help for a few days, but getting up and walking around is good for you even if it does hurt.
you will want to take stool softeners and eat stuff that will help move your bowels, because that is a big complainer of sisters postop is having a poo. It does hurt to have the first couple of poos because everything is moved around during surgery.
I hope that he doen't have to do that and you can still have the lap, that is pretty easy recovery about 2 weeks. If you have any other questions, please feel free to PM or email me as I have had 3 laparotomies in less than a year.
