3 weeks today........changed meds

Yeah. My plastic surgeon told me, one week post-op, to stop the Vicodin and just take Advil. However, he was kind enough to tell me I could take 2 Advil (400 mg. total) at every dose. 400 mg. of Advil isn't even enough for a slight headache for me!

Go figure.

I am justa basket case now.......I'm waitng by the phone to see if he "oks) me taking the advil or tylenol in between the naproxen......don't you think he could have "warned" me about this.......I feel so scared and of course in pain not knowing about this......I would have gradually tapered myself and made myself go longer in between doses but now I do feel like a druggie......I am clueless on what to do next or what to tell the nurse when she calls back any minute now!

Hi Nine,

Obviously this is not the right medication for you, so don't feel bad about asking your DR for something else.

For me, post-op morphine through IV was not working so had to switch to Empracet + indomethacin suppositories for relief. Strange since these are supposedly milder than morphine, but it worked.

Naproxen is an anti-inflammatory. I used to take it prior to surgery to reduce flow & help with severe cramps. I was useful, but it had to be taken before or at the very beginning of pain. If you are already in pain when you take it, it might not work.

Your Dr should OK tylenol, I used to mix them with no problem but if you're in a lot of pain you might need a stronger pain killer than Tylenol.

Taking MOTRIN OR ADVIL with Naproxen is NOT recommended since they belong to the same type of medication than Naproxen (NSAIDS) and too much can cause stomach or bowel ulcers.

Hang on and good luck

Nine-
I had this trouble getting anough pain meds. I called for more percocet about a week out and got the "talk" from the nurses about how I should be fine soon with Advil. I was NOT and went to GP and got more percocet. GP had no trouble doing this for me. Then, yesterday at one of my check ups back with GYN, he asked about pain. I told him I had stepped down to one or two darvocet a day and he asked if I needed any more percocet. I told him that 2 weeks ago the nurse in HIS office was telling me to get off it. He laughed and said that was silly. He wrote me another prescription. I just don't get these offices and the weirs non-communication between them and their nurses.
Anyway- good luck!

Be your own best advocate

I'm lerning something the hard way. We have got to be our own best advocate. I'm great at being an advocate for the entire rest of the World, and many of us are this way. But when it comes to me, I absolutely cannot stand up and say "Hey, I have a problem here". I spent 6 hours last night in the ER and still couldn't say find the problems, don't just shoot me full of pain meds and release me.

I've vowed to start looking at scenarious and as if someone else is going through the situation, and then speak. "Nine" I feel horrible that your going through this, please know we're in your corner with you.

well according to the nurse he doesn't want to give me anymore pain meds..........this afternoon he called in torodal.....something like that......in other words a different kind of naproxen.........but this one can only be taken for 5 days!!!! I didn't even go get it........he tried that with me before with my periods.....i had to take that with the darvocet to control the pain and now he wants me just to take the anti-inflammatory........yeah right!!
I did get my appointment changed to this Friday instead of next week.......I went ahead and took the naporxen but now Im nauseated.....go figure!
I am hurting, sad and for the first time getting depressed.......this is not a good place to be at 3 weeks..........
I just don't know what to do........I think my doctor thinks I abused the pain meds when I followed EXACTLY what was on the bottle.........I guess Friday we can talk face to face.........

Thanks to all of you for all your support......it means so much right now!

Nine,

ABSOLUTELY go to your GP tomorrow and if no luck there, go to the ER! You should not have to live like this in this much pain. It is not healthy for your recovery to be in this much pain muchless your state of mind!
Just show up in the morning and see him, if he doesn't help you with something stronger, then go directly to the ER and do not worry about it. We know that you are not a druggie. Being a nurse, I hate saying this, but alas it is true, the office nurse isnot talking to your doctor when you call, she has know idea what you are going through. just like that other poster whose doc had no idea that she even called!
You don't deserve this and I feel like punching his lights out.
Let me know what your GP says and I hope he will help you. If not, the ER will at least give you something there and help you.
