Another LEEP ?, if I may?

For those of you that have had LEEPs...may I ask how yours was done?

For my 1st one, the dr put me under. Well, more like a twilight state. It was done at a single day surgery facility. He said he does this b/c it wouldn't be good for me to move during the procedure.

For the one I'm having next Monday, the dr (different one) says he does 90% of LEEPs in his office with just a local anesthetic. He sais obviously, it would not be good for me to move, but doesn't see that it warrants general anesthesia. He did say that if I would rather it be done that way, he will do it. But it would have to be rescheduled since it would be done at the hospital. Plus, more expense (we have crummy insurance) because of anesthesia & hospital fees.

So, bascially, I guess I'd RATHER it be done in the hospital, but really can't afford the extra cost (I'm still paying off the first one - my out of pocket cost was about $900). Am I just being a baby? LOL

I was wondering what sort of procedure others went through & if you were happy with it being done that way.

Thanks so much for the input!

Another LEEP ?, if I may?

Sorry to hear you are having to go through another leep..... I had to have 4 leeps done in the last 2 years and I had all of mine in the doctors office.... The first one I was pretty freaked out about and the doctor had me take valium 1 hour before the procedure..... The valium made me sicker then a dog..... So when it came time for the next 3 I had a different doctor and they asked me if I wanted anything and I said NOPE..... They were pretty shocked, but they walked me right through it.... I didn't know that you could have the leep under general.... My first doctor wasn't that good..... They are pretty intense, but my doctors assistant walked me right though them and it wasn't to bad..... I think the worst part of the procedure is the burning smell....... If I can give you anymore advise just let me know and good luck to ya.....

Another LEEP ?, if I may?

I had mine in the doctor's office, and had no problem (and I am the biggest baby about internal procedures.....) My doc gave me a valium, and I took it, but could have easily done without it. Really, of all the procedures I've had done, this was one of the easiest to bear.

Hi Samikins723
My LEEP story is a bit 'both sides of the coin'. I had 2 of these done last year within 2 weeks of each other and for the first one I wish I had been unaware of what was going on. Mine both took place in my gynocologists rooms and apparantly this is quite common. About the first 5 minutes or so of the procedure it just felt like a kind of scraping and pulling but was only uncomfortable rather than painful. The rest of it was a nightmare.........the local anesthetic obviously hadn't numbed everything and was topped up 3 times....the wire loop hit areas that were not numb over and over and I was literally lifting off the table, it was the end of the procedure I was in tears, was shaking and a mess. My gyno' was very apologetic but was perplexed about the anesthetic not 'taking' and the amount he had to use. I had to have this repeated 2 weeks later ( I do actually like my gyno' and do trust him) and fortunately this one went ok due to heaps and heaps of local. I've since been diagnosed with MS and I really feel that this had something to do with my sensitivity to pain and needing so much local.
I suggest if you are feeling nervous about having this done you get take some sort of relaxant beforehand and ensure that enough time is allowed for the local anesthetic to be fully effective. I've had 2 different experiences with LEEP and would more than likely go through it again this way......I really don't mean to put you off or make you scared, this is just what happened to me.

Another LEEP ?, if I may?

For both of my LEEPs I just had local anesthetic in the gyn's office. I did not take any kind of medication either before or after (besides ibuprofen) and I had a pretty easy time both times. Actually, I thought that the punch biopsies and swab taken at the colposcopy were way worse than the actual LEEPs! The numbing with the needle is a little uncomfortable and sensitive, but that is over quickly and then you are totally numb and don't feel a thing. It is actually kind of like getting a cavity filled at the dentist's office. They numb the skin with a topical before they even insert the needle. Then once you are numb it is nothing but noise! I actually was very scared for my first one, but it was over before I knew it. And then for my second one I knew what to expect, so I was just anxious for it to be over with and get the results. My doctor and nurse told me exactly what they were doing the whole procedure, and this really kept my mind at ease and I think helped me not to get startled and jump or move at all. I hope all goes well with you. Let us know if you have any other questions, this is the place to come with them! Keep us posted!

Another LEEP ?, if I may?

I wanted to thank everyone for their posts. They really helped alot.

I have a call in to the dr's office to see if he will prescribe something for me to take beforehand (to relax me). The nurse seemed "put off" by my request though. I explained to her that I was knocked out for my last LEEP & was really nervous about this...blah, blah, blah. She never said anything & then finally, after I had run out of things to say, she just said "What pharmacy?". Made me feel like she though I was a druggie or something. She said the dr wouldn't be in until today & they'd call to let me know. From your posts, I don't feel like this was an unreasonable request, but she sure made me feel like it was. I haven't heard back from them yet.

So, I will have my 2nd LEEP on Monday. Not sure if I'll have the results before Christmas (doubtful), but I'll post when I get them.

Thanks again everyone & I hope you all have a happy & safe holiday!
