Anyone else been told they should wear a girdle?

I had a TAH on 29 November. I will be 3 weeks post op on Monday. I have uterine or should I say had uterine fibroids for over 10 years. My periods had become extremely painful to the point that I actually threw up from the pain on several occasions. The bleeding was so heavy that within the last two years I became so anemic that I almost had to have blood transfusions. My recovery seems to be going well. I have an older friend that had a TAH over 10 years ago and she suggested that I wear a girdle for support during healing. She said that it made her feel so much better. Has anyone tried this?

Hey there!

I have heard of plenty of women using a binder (not really a girdle, but a stretchy Ace bandage kind of thing) around their tummy area to help stabilize things. You might find that a girdle might be a little extreme.

One thing I would do is check with the DR about this. Sounds silly, but there are some doctors who will advise against this for specific reasons depending on the patient and her medical history.

I used a tummy pillow. I carried around with me for weeks. I placed it on my tummy even when lying down. It really helped stabilize my tummy, especially when coughing, sneezing, and laughing. There is a swelly belly band in the Hystersisters store that you may be interested in trying.

I'm using a tummy binder, they put it on me right after surgery. Its about 12 inches wide and wraps around my mid section. I only take it off to shower, and occassionally when I'm laying flat and still. It helps me a lot cause I have a loose tummy from losing about 45 lbs before surgery (not to mention having two big babies, lol) I'm not wearing panties though, can't imagine wearing a girdle, that would be too much for me. Good luck.
