What is the cuff, NED?

Hello, sisters!

I've been doing a lot of reading and learning here since I was scheduled for a vag hyst in early January for fibroids, cystocele, excessive bleeding and pain that radiates all the way down my legs, and I'm totally exhausted from all of this!

I am SO heartened by your wise words and willingness to support people you have never even met --- women are amazing, and SO generous!

I just have two quick questions, tho' I'm sure I'll have more (heheh): I keep seeing reference to the vaginal cuff, and also something about "NED" that I can't figure out. Can someone please clue me in?

Thanks, girls! Hope you all are warm and snug tonight, and you're letting friends and family treat you all like the princesses you are!

Love to all,

Amoreena

What is the cuff, NED?

Hi and Welcome,

The cuff is the portion of vaginal tissue directly under the cervix. The doctor sews the top of the vagina together at this cuff site and leaves a tiny amount of space for natural surgery drainage. This space heals over (granulation) in about 4-6 weeks. The cuff is in reference to the finish of the surgery site.

Ned....don't know.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Maralyn. That makes more sense than the mental picture I had of some kind of surgical binding material forming a cuff in that area...of course, I was thinking, "Noooo, thank you!" Thanks for taking the time to explain to a novice.

What is the cuff, NED?

Don't know about NED...I haven't seen that before. Try thinking of the vaginal cuff this way.
The surgeon removes your cervix which connects the uterus with the vagina...so you have this tube with an opening on both ends...one end to the outside and one opens to your insides. They close the end of your vagina that opens to the inside and then stitch it shut...like repairing a hole in the toe of a sock, that is your vaginal cuff....so there is no longer a way for the insides to come out or anything to get in your insides...if that last statement made sense

You are both welcome. I can't take credit on it though, I saw someone months ago post that analogy

Lennoxlass, thank you for clearing up something that had really puzzled me. I love it that you took the time to write from the other side of the world to answer my question! Here's hoping you (and all the sisters, too) have a wonderful holiday and New Year --- and NED!
